Yesterday, California adopted a law to raise the pay received by incarcerated firefighters when they’re fighting a fire from $1 to $7.25 per hour—meeting the federal minimum wage. Four other new laws also give new rights to incarcerated firefighters.

Monarchy is no way to design a system and you can see why the founding fathers planned against it, however their system relies on each part behaving well, see where that got them. At least Constitutional Monarchies have not worked out like that.

Counter point: monarchies are inherently anti democratic and therefore bad. If you still operate under the idea that there are some “good” monarchies out there, then you might not be equipped to comment on this moment.

Incidentally, I’ve been chafing a bit at the “No Kings” thing, because there are loads of monarchies that have more limits on executive power than the US does, but it has the great advantage that it makes Americans who want to oppose it sound, well, unamerican….

Is it true that less than 3 days after the attack on Israel Hamas offered to return all the hostages taken if Israel agreed not to attack Gaza?

If so why are Israelis not criticising Netanyahu rather than celebrating the return of the survivors?

We had the merlin app running while we were feeding the sparrows, blackbirds, and starlings. We thought we heard Ravens, confirmed by the Merlin app. Then it said Great spotted woodpecker, and then it said Osprey!

A Beck wavelength spectrometer. This one is perhaps 1950s or 60s. The company ceased in 1968.

I have a much more substantial one by Adam Hilger from the 1920s. I also have a monochromator by Adam Hilger
