In theory, sure. I actually believe that's more likely than the Security Council route.
crary.bsky.social
The U.S. is not a signatory to the ICJ, so it can't bring charges (except through the U.N. Security Council, where such a measure would be vetoed--by the U.S.).

I like to imagine that somewhere in the multiverse, every time there's a prayer to haShem, Noah's son is like "Hey, were you looking for me? No? Okay."

Yeah, this is a fair reaction

So, (1) I miss Wordperfect (you win universe); and (2) I used to work in a government law office where it became a running joke that at least once a day, a lawyer or assistant would yell "f*@#ing Word!" loud enough for everyone to hear.

Yes. The quoted post is accurate, as Article VI says there must be an oath, but the important point here is Article I, Section 5, which says the House and Senate get to decide how they do business and deal with members. If the majority says it has to be the Speaker, then it has to be.

🚨 The DSCC — led by Kirsten Gillibrand, Mark Kelly, Adam Schiff, and Lisa Blunt Rochester — has formed a joint fundraising committee with Janet Mills.

Mills, running against Graham Platner in the Maine Democratic Senate primary, would become the oldest freshman (79) ever elected, to a 6-year term.

It is at least *interesting* that the people making this supposedly world-changing technology think its most profitable use cases are: social media videos and sexting.

I dont think this story is getting enough attention. China has put rigid controls on the supply of rare earth metals to the USA, but after a little tantrum, Trump has been left pretending its no big deal. He has already weakened the US so much, he has few options. finance.yahoo.com/news/china-f...
China Flexes Superpower Status Using Rare Earths in Global Supply Chain Grab
The rules announced last week require overseas companies to obtain Chinese government approval before exporting products containing even trace amounts of certain rare earths that originated in China. ...

Do you have a theory/guess as to when it morphed into a personal name?

I think Mr. Weigel does a good job answering his own question here, but I also think it has a lot to do with the fact that conservatism has been largely fuelled by its grievances ever since Watergate.
daveweigel.bsky.social
I'm generalizing, but why do conservatives remember political irritations for so much longer than liberals?

It's been 17 years since Obama said some voters "cling to their guns, to their religion" and I heard a senator denounce that last month.

Obvious theory: Media ecosystem puts it on repeat

yesterday on twitter, some of the biggest far right doxxing users were suspended and then elon musk caught wind, and reinstated them. get everyone you can off twitter. it is firmly a pro-doxxing-if-you’re-far-right platform

That absolutely tracks for me, because the level of emotion I tend to see seems out of proportion with the articulated critiques. Thanks!

I see a lot of distaste for "Dawn of Everything" in the academic world, and I kinda don't get it. I mean, it's definitely got a pointed thesis, and they go a bit far for me sometimes, but overall I think it's a valuable counterargument to a lot of historical narratives.

Yeah. People keep saying he helped usher in a lot of our current nonsense, and I would agree with that. But that can be litigated later. Right now, anyone who is rowing in the right direction is on the team, as far as I am concerned.

I'm sorry, is the Trump Administration talking to a tech platform?

Is it...requesting content moderation?
Today following outreach from @thejusticedept, Facebook removed a large group page that was being used to dox and target @ICEgov agents in Chicago.
The wave of violence against ICE has been driven by online apps and social media campaigns designed to put ICE officers at risk just for doing their jobs. The Department of Justice will continue engaging tech companies to eliminate platforms where radicals can incite imminent violence against federal law enforcement.

I am not sure at a gut level I would agree with "far less," but at the same time, I think everyone everywhere needs to realize that fascism is an imminent and omnipresent threat.

I have said this many times, but growing up in the U.S., I thought monarchies were just plain dumb. Now being a citizen and resident of Canada, I absolutely see the advantage of having the head of your executive be an intentional figurehead.
qjurecic.bsky.social
Showing up to No Kings with a sign reading “monarchy is an affront to human dignity but, when incorporated into a liberal democratic system, may nevertheless be a useful safety valve for nationalist and/or authoritarian impulses” and then getting clobbered by a Buttigieg-supporting grandmother
mthrjo.bsky.social
Incidentally, I’ve been chafing a bit at the “No Kings” thing, because there are loads of monarchies that have more limits on executive power than the US does, but it has the great advantage that it makes Americans who want to oppose it sound, well, unamerican….

The executive is usurping a core Article I function, this should be treated with the same amount of alarm as if he declared he's disbanding Congress, because that's functionally what he's doing/done

This is the kind of application I thought (and hoped) AI would be good for--managing and analyzing large undifferentiated data sets. More of this, please, and less romancing AIs, asking them the meaning of life, or "vibe physics."
