Greenpeace Canada climate campaigner capable of boring you about energy transitions, climate solutions and the history of oil industry perfidy. Part-time prof at U of Toronto. Sci-fi aficionada.
Smart take: "Simply put, the federal government is trying to find a policy solution to what is in reality an identity problem. Such attempts to placate will only embolden, because the goal isn’t compromise."

Another night to sleep on this and I'm solidifying this take

There is a reason industry/govt sees a bit win in trading the regulations that would have forced real emissions reductions (oil and gas cap and CER) for vauge future carbon pricing promises that some are claiming will achieve the same 1/
After some time for reflection I think this is one of the biggest open questions that has a big impact on how much climate action we will see in Canada -
unless I'm reading this wrong (?) it doesn't say the carbon floor will be $130 by April. It says there will be an agreement by April 1/
Where does it say $130 in April? it says they will by April agree on what the timeline and price increases are.
I would bet a very large sum of money it will not be $130 effective price in April.

What we have witnessed tday in this new federal-Alberta agreement is a complete abandonment of core federal climate policy and a complete abdication to the MAGA-aligned govt of Alberta and to oil & gas corporations that send huge chunks their profits to the US.

1. This federal-Alberta pipeline MOU is even worse than I expected. Even before we get to the pipeline:
- exempts AB from net zero electricity reg (AB produces 44% of all electricity-related GHGs in Canada).
- delays methane reg by 5 years (75% redn by 2035 rather than 2030.

The fact that the Minister of Natural Resources is announcing an earthquake warning system in Quebec while the Prime Minister announces a pipeline in Calgary is a little on the nose...
Today, along with provincial ministers Dunlop and Lafrenière, Minister Hodgson announced that the Earthquake Early Warning system is now operational in eastern Ontario and Quebec.

As we await the pipeline MOU, a reminder that Alberta has 12% of Canada’s population and
• 38% of national GHG emissions
• 75% of oil and gas-related GHGs
• 51% of electricity-related GHGS

Heading to Ottawa for Pipeline-palooza MOU announcement tomorrow. The first time I did this trek to fight a pipeline through northern BC was in 2011. I'd really prefer to not have to do this all over again. Here's why: www.greenpeace.org/canada/en/st...

Alberta’s emissions performance credits, which can be used to comply with the industrial carbon pricing system, are now trading at just C$17 per tonne.

The frozen $95 per tonne headline price is largely irrelevant.

Is this an "AI get out of jail free" card? There's an article in Le Devoir on how an unannounced clause in the budget implementation bill allows a Minister to exempt any person/company/province from any law (other than Criminal Code) if Minister deems it is in public interest & supports innovation

It’s an interesting approach to provide clarity on a tanker ban while failing to meet with the Coastal First Nations despite repeated requests - the community that would be directly affected by any spill - while having dozens or more meetings with fossil fuel lobbyists, AB, Sask.

more and more countries are going to see that getting off foreign oil imports is a great reason to accelerate electrification and renewables buildout, regardless of what it means for the climate
The energy transition happens often in unlikely places at unprecedented rates.

Take Nepal: Over the past year, electric vehicles accounted for 76 percent of all passenger vehicles and half of the light commercial vehicles sold in Nepal.

Five years ago, that number was essentially zero.
