Marge destroying the Chanel suit with her sewing machine as allegory for the process of research ruining the ideas that were safe in your head 🙂‍↕️

I don’t know why I used such a jovial image when really I have a yawning pit of dread inside me about the whole thing, perhaps I was wrapped up in the joy of posting

The reason the Right are so invested in the myth that the arts have no value isn’t because the arts don’t generate wealth (they do); it’s that studying the arts teaches people to imagine better ways of judging the value of an idea than by counting how much money it makes…

we're surrounded by media all the time.
How many hours do you spend looking at a screen each day?
Why? What is it that draws you in and keeps you there?
Don't you think it might be important for someone to research that stuff?

The only conversations about higher ed in the British press are either “the woke students are being mean” or “these only value of education is to make money, idiot” and it makes me SICK

So many of them had stories to share about their family members mocking or undermining their decision to study a broad range of media-related subjects, because they either couldn’t understand what media + comms studies look like or couldn’t instantly connect it to earning power

This week in my Intro to Media and Comms Research seminar, 1st year students discussed an article from *2016* where over 60% of newspapers analysed framed Media Studies as a “soft”/“mickey mouse” subject despite credible evidence that Media Studies is both popular and produces successful grads

How is this repeatedly made into a policy issue - by *all* parties - when the blunt fact of the matter is that grown adults who are obliged to pay for their own education, and relentlessly pursued to repay their loans, should be able to study whatever the fuck they want.

Modern curse: I hope that [thing u like] becomes a stop on the press junket and loses some of its charm and outsider-looking-in feel. And while you don’t stop listening to it totally, because it’s still [thing u like] and it’s entertaining *enough*, you can tell it’ll never be what it was

No one told me that “smells like hospital” is in episode ONE, my god. I bet Andy Cohen clocked his heels together in glee when he heard that #rhoslc

Late to the party, but I’m starting Real Housewives of Salt Lake City from the top. Here is what I know in advance:
- someone is married to their (step)grandfather
- “smells like hospital”
- “RECEIPTS, PROOF, TIMELINES”
- Jen Shah eventually goes to prison

I strongly agree with Dorian on this. The “not aimed at me/you” diminishes a good song (or film or book) to a product intended for a particular demographic. When I see it used, I think, oh right, I see the market beat you.

I also strenuously reject the idea that any pop music is “not aimed at me”. I doubt that, say, Chappell Roan or Billie Eilish are gunning for my demographic but a good song is a good song. Pop music isn’t some mysterious language that only people under 30 can comprehend

Anyway I’ve been bumping a fair whack of new jack swing and city pop inflected kpop lately, and that’s fun. Big fan of fizzy synths

very funny for a billionaire to say “I only want you” and paint the rest of the world as vapid and greedy
