For these average stats to be REALLY useful, they need SO MANY more data points outside of page rates. And there are so many factors that affect page rates, honestly, that single statistic is next to useless.

…Especially since they only really report the mid to low end of the spectrum.

Think about it… to get good enough to get ANY gig in comics, you likely had to practice/train/go to school at least as long as a plumber does to learn their trade.

When was the last time you paid a plumber $20/hr…?

They wouldn’t even look at your toilet for that, much less unclog it.

Look, I’m all for transparency and I do believe most these surveys are put together with the best intentions, but I think we all know how underpaid creators are.

We need to start thinking of ourselves as SKILLED PROFESSIONALS who are building a career… not gig workers.

Apparently, one of those “average rates for comic pros” things is going around again, and they are… BAD.

At BEST, they highlight how underpaid the industry is.

At WORST, they embolden publishers to pay less.

The response to these things should be posting what the industry SHOULD be paying.
