I’m always interested in anything that talks about sexual dimorphism in otariids. Look up some comparisons of male and female fur seals, it’s wild.
New blog post, and it's a long one: all about the fossil record and evolution of "eared seals" - or, the fur seals and sea lions. I review their anatomy, current and former diversity, phylogeny, macroevolutionary patterns, and sexual dimorphism. 🦖🦑🐬🧪 #marinemammals #paleontology #evolution

An otters’ favorite pastime. From the photo, it looks like the otter isn’t tagged. Otter 841 and some earlier miscreants had received some amount of human care, so it would be interesting if this is a completely wild water weasel thats getting in on the thieving.

Sea otter steals surfer’s board in Santa Cruz; woman uninjured
Santa Cruz firefighters tell KSBW 8 that a sea otter took a woman’s surfboard around 5:07 p.m. and may have nipped at her, but did not break the skin. Firefighters pulled her to shore.

No, I do not care about splines. But I am trying to learn about GAMLSS regression, and yes, it is to this dark place that this topic has taken me

one signature of human impacts on the planet (esp climate change) is ecosystems becoming less unique—a process called "biotic homogenization".

it turns out that isn't happening in the global oceans!

This is horrible. I don't even know what to say. Some of our most key polar data.

"As a result, the level of services for affected products below will be reduced to Basic—meaning they will remain accessible but may not be actively maintained, updated, or fully supported."
