For the new folks, some info beyond the bio!

In real life, I’ve been dealing with cancer treatments the last year. So my “popular” writing tends to be about that.

In my academic life, I write on a mix of patristics (mainly 4th c.) and modern theology (mainly on Robert W. Jenson).

I think most people would be shocked to discover that there are places outside Europe and North America that were doing this before they were even born

One of the most endearing characteristics of my toddler is his refusal to understand the typical social convention of a high-five being a one-and-done kinda thing. If you keep your hand up, he’ll just keep high-fiving you forever.

If AI can’t get muscles and bones and things we’ve known about since, I dunno, Galen?

Then how the hell is AI going to be able to parse out all the heresies of the history of the church?

That’s fascinating!

And boy if this isn’t one of the trickiest aspects of the Abp of Cant historically—everyone else in the world thinks the appointment should be globally minded, meanwhile the CofE itself needs its pastor or it’s going to just disintegrate.

Same, we’ve somehow had many Nigerian folks end up in Hamilton now worshipping in our diocese. Which is wild to me because it’s almost certainly 10000% more liberal than whichever Nigerian diocese they were a part of.

So Nigeria has been a part of an alliance of Anglican churches resisting the moves of European and North American churches still technically “in” the communion. But Nigeria has now wholesale left, which is huge.

From the leavers’ point of view, their geographical bishops had excommunicated themselves by “changing” the “doctrine” of the church. From the stayers’ point of view, these folks leaving were excommunicating themselves by seeking foreign leadership.

That’s why it was such a huge stink when Episcopal (and to a smaller extent Canadian Anglican) churches started severing themselves from their geographical authorities and asking African bishops to take over.

Technically no. “Traditionally” the Abp of Cant is considered primus inter pares, and throughout history this has been interpreted differently. But really, literally, each national church is self-directing. (Cont.)

I think that’s the key for me. I don’t lump everyone in GAFCON in with schism, but if you aided and abetted schism somewhere else…

Well this is the fun magic of making Anglican Soup, since we don’t have a pope technically none of this matters since the Archbishop of Canterbury isn’t in charge of Nigeria anyway 🤷‍♂️

This is complicated. On the one hand, obviously further fracturing is bad. On the other, the Nigerian Church has played a huge role in furthering the fractures in American Anglicanism. I’m surprised it took this long, really.

I dunno, I think mentally unstable folks tend to bottle their feelings rather than experience them. Also there’s no clock on your grieving process.

(Also also “Crying in the Corn Pit” would make a killer Dashboard Confessional album title)

If you want to see where exegesis was headed in the 13th c., buckle up with Nicholas. That’s the least untenable connection he makes in that whole commentary series.
