“Lansdell has crafted a unique, distinctive race—the knyads—whose social and political structure has deep implications for the plot.”
—Livia J. Elliot, Author of Dance with Me
I think it safely fits into cyberpunk, but also has a dash of fantasy and some light horror.”

Answering for Day 12:
Of our 5 antagonists, only 2 have had speaking roles in Far Removed. We get to learn a lot more about all of them in the sequel. One villain is vain and paranoid. Another may harbour a noble streak. Prismer notices the nuances more than Oklas does.

Oh, yes. I remember babysitting for someone whose baby had just started walking. They'd moved into a new house and nothing was childproofed. I'd spend a few hours shutting myself and her in the least dangerous room (carpeted floor with fewer exposed power sockets).
cblansdell.bsky.social
That is reassuring! Living a good life is more important than having a really long life anyway.
cblansdell.bsky.social
The "until their deaths" bit has me worried for Charlie and Ermin...
cblansdell.bsky.social
I may also have some eye stuff in my book.
cblansdell.bsky.social
I am guessing "activists" is meant to be used as an insult here (don't know why). But really, the image on the right should just read "designed with perfectly normal people" in mind.

I recently learned eye trauma was a content warning some people need 😅

As my way of thanking the indie writing community for supporting me through the years, I'm offering free content/quote pulls for my birthday! Preference for BIPOC or disabled authors + SFF books on the shorter side. Turnaround will be 3 weeks - I have a baby so I can't be as fast as I used to alas 😅

You really have to want that lifestyle in your bones to chase it to the extent that some do.
I saw someone on Twitter saying he is satisfied that he could comfortably fill a pub with the people who have read and enjoyed his book. I liked that.

I try to take inspiration from writers like you who support others and grow their audiences thoughtfully.

Very well articulated. If I spend any amount of time on social media, I need to monitor how I'm being influenced.

There is a beauty to writing in solitude. Then the time comes for you to share what you've made. Some lovely things grow from community, but they can also get choked by weeds.

The cliques, the infighting, the whisper networks, the ladderism... make the genre/sff scene sound like a minefield (which, in a way, it is).

Such nastiness shouldn't exist - but the scene is human-made and filled with human desires. Wanting to belong sometimes makes people do shitty things.
cblansdell.bsky.social
I like that. Thanks for sharing the song and quote.

Your books have a maturity that would be hard for someone with limited life experience to emulate. I know I wasn't the right person to be writing my duology in my 20s. I could have written something, but it wouldn't have been that story.
cblansdell.bsky.social
Confidence is a huge factor. But books come when they are ready. The person you are when you write a story is part of its marrow. So in a sense, no time is wasted. Your stories were marinating inside of you the whole time.

Request for writers who consider me a friend, especially those of you who do WIPSnips or other engagement posts talking about your wip:

If you have the time and energy, post here about your wip. Give me CONTEXT. Tell me who your characters are and their relationships. Tell me about your setting.

Next, you’ll meet Prismer, an indentured servant at the Assembly Chambers. She’s committed crimes in the past and has been marked for them (which is why she wears a mask). She also has some useful skillsets. Standoffish on the surface, but very warm underneath. The 2 mcs inhabit different classes.
cblansdell.bsky.social
Well, we have my marine people evolved from corals: knyads. The first character you’ll meet is Oklas, who is a philanthropist and rebel sympathiser (the 5 sovereigns aren’t wonderful to live under). He's a politician and inventor who has founded a college.

Snippet from Dirt You Shall Become, short story in Dirt You Shall Become: The scent of rot was heavy in the shade behind the yew. Mille clutched the bucket of potato peels and coffee grinds to her chest and stared into the darkness behind the green archway of ivy twisting around a dead plumtree. Two beady eyes stared back at her.
“Is that you, Cleo? Ps-ps-ps.” She leaned forward and flicked her fingers to lure out the cat. A mosquito buzzed by her ear, and she waved it away, absentmindedly. Her heart drummed when the eyes in the dark blinked.
“Cleocatra? Come here, girl. Ps-ps.” Mood board for Dirt You Shall Become, upcoming short story collection with a garden theme.
6 pictures. Top: earthworm, pink peonies, middle: garden gnome, weeds. Bottom: fat toad and a shovel with dirt. All with a brown hue.
Text: Dirt You Shall Become. Garden-themed horror short stories by Karen Lykkebo. Coming Spring 2025
