As a person who cares about reading and human thinking, I’d like to share the simmering rage I feel knowing that opening a 4+ page essay in Adobe Acrobat automatically prompts this message: “This appears to be a long document. Save time by reading a summary using AI Assistant."
Text that appears when opening a PDF document in Acrobat: "This appears to be a long document. Save time by reading a summary using AI Assistant” appears.

[in the executive suite] hey fellas is it "authentic" to consider your European set a character in your heavily co-produced project

Methinks the global streaming platform's executive doth protest too much. (2)

Well, I quoted @bilgeebiri.bsky.social in my introduction to Hamnet tonight, warning everyone that this was going to be an emotional experience but I don't remember the last time I was sobbing so hard with 180 other people. Hamnet is an incredible film. Go see it when it opens in January.

I only watched WEAPONS for this, but it's nice to know Ralph Fiennes can get dirty once in a while

AI logic applied to weight loss. The pleasure (of art/writing/food) should be what innovation is offering, not what it takes away

AI in education is unaccountable, opaque, and increasingly impervious to critique - you can't challenge it, you can't know what it does, you can't say it's wrong because it responsibilizes the user for its faults.

AI in education is something to avoid as much as you can.

I was on NPR Morning Edition to talk about the deeply troubling ethical issue of faculty using AI to grade student assignments. I'm glad this issue is getting more attention, but it is also one I don't see clear a path forward. www.npr.org/2025/10/07/n...
More college students are using AI for class. Their professors aren't far behind
More college students are using AI chatbots to help them with their studies. But data recently released by an AI company shows they're aren't the only ones using the technology.

There are so few people actually asking, “is this any good for what we do?” Instead people give lip service to “responsible use” while plowing ahead with punching “AI” into everything. This isn’t just about selling a product; it’s about co-opting humanities researchers to train “AI” models.

If you are a supporter and reader of @contingent-mag.bsky.social one of the biggest things you can do to help us at the moment is get this CFP to the NTT folks in your life. The fracturing of social media has made it very difficult to get the word out esp. to adjuncts and VAPs.
CFP: A Time of Monsters
The monster has been here all along. It is a historical constant that manifests in wildly different ways across time, place, and culture. Whatever form it takes, the monster claws at categories; it un...
