Even though there are billions of dollars in contingency funds that could be used to fund SNAP, the Trump Administration is using the government shutdown to suspend food stamp benefits for the first time in the program’s history.

It’s not just cruel—it’s illegal.

In 2024, SNAP helped more than 41 million people avoid hunger or malnutrition

62% of SNAP participants are in families with children

37% are in families with members who are elderly or have disabilities

SNAP benefits have never been interrupted during previous federal government shutdowns

Due to the ongoing federal shutdown, CalFresh benefits that would have been available November 1st will be delayed. In SD 33, over 160,000 people receive CalFresh benefits.

Beneficiaries can continue using any unused CalFresh benefits on their EBT cards in November.
