It took them three tries and an hour of riding, but they finally managed to find a place to spend the night. The land was drier with more high ground on this side of the river, at least until the rains came in late summer, and dozens of little farms dotted the sides of the roadway, presumably all the way to the next river twenty miles away. Spencer imagined it was a picturesque landscape when you weren’t riding along the road in the dark, hoping your horse didn’t step in a hole and break its leg, while banging on strangers’ doors every few miles.

Their hosts were very accommodating, and they ought to be for the price they charged us, Spencer noted, giving them two lanterns and a pile of blankets to make their stay more comfortable. Unfortunately there wasn’t anything to be done about the smell of hay and horse manure or the equally pungent aroma of the oxen who pulled the plows. It was a barn, no getting around it, and Spencer found himself wistful for the relative privilege of sleeping on an attic floor.

“Maybe I could be a Grower,” he mused as we meandered out into Marlon Hall, the first of Exeter Neighborhood’s web of corridors. “Get myself a Growing Room, grow some... y’know, lemons or something. Yeah?”
“Nah.” I shook my head. I couldn’t see Kazuo as a Grower; he didn’t have the patience.
“Or I could be a Communications Operator.”
“Ha!” Jon chortled. “No way would anyone ever put you in charge of the communication boxes. You’d spend all your time making prank calls to peoples’ rooms.”
“Not true,” said Kazuo. “Sometimes I’d prank call the whole Tenement instead.”
“But you couldn’t tell lies, though,” Jon pointed out. “Rule 29.”
“I wouldn’t need to.” Kazuo grinned like a fiend. “I’d just say something like, ‘Attention, tenants! Please note that everything is fine. There’s no need to panic. It’s all fine, really. It’s fine.’ And then everyone would start to worry, wondering what was really going on. And once they realized everything actually was fine, I’d just say, well, I told you.”
I snickered. “And this is exactly why no one will ever put you in charge of the communication boxes.”
