I would also add that this is pretty accessibly written and I'd encourage folks digging in for themselves.

Gradually working my way through "Dilexi Te" and was struck to find Pope Leo briefly touching on the connection between urban planning and justice for the poor.

96. One structural issue that cannot realistically be resolved from above and needs to be addressed as quickly as possible has to do with the locations, neighborhoods, homes and cities where the poor live and spend their time. All of us appreciate the beauty of “those cities which overcome paralyzing mistrust, integrate those who are different and make this very integration a new factor of development! How attractive are those cities which, even in their architectural design, are full of spaces which connect, relate and favor the recognition of others!” [102] Yet, at the same time, “we cannot fail to consider the effects on people’s lives of environmental deterioration, current models of development and the throwaway culture.” [103] For “the deterioration of the environment and of society affects the most vulnerable people on the planet.” [104]

We will need Nuremberg-like trials

ICE secretly kidnap autistic boy during bathroom break—never notify parents.

Mother reported him missing a week ago—turns out ICE had him detained the whole time.

He was helping sell fruit and asked to go to the restroom—by the time she was done helping a customer he was gone.

“If he loses his health insurance, I could lose my son.” 😢

That’s not right. That’s why Suz and many others showed up at Congressman Emmer’s office, calling on him and his fellow Republican Congressmembers to put Minnesotans’ healthcare over billionaire tax breaks. 💪🏥

Chicago priest Fr. Larry Dowling describes procession to ICE facility: “No one had the courage to speak directly to us. No one from Homeland Security could stand in the presence of the Monstrance holding the Blessed Sacrament. No wonder. Evil is repelled, recoils in the presence of Christ.”

🧵:
The world’s extremely poor are also often extremely remote, with limited access to healthcare & health education. In many developing countries, the government—often with the help of the UN and, until this year, USAID—maintains health posts that bring these services to people living off the grid.

Today, I was asked how to pray for us in Chicago. I responded with a detailed list of ways they can engage with the justice issues using time, money, or influence.

White evangelicalism's belief that prayer *by itself* will change the world is messed up and dangerous. We gotta act *and* pray.⚓️

but what do I know, I'm just a trained chaplain who pivoted to working in the legislature because I struggled deeply with the lack of meaningful tools of public advocacy within that profession.

5) Finally, Fletcher Merkel's funeral was held at Mount Olivet. To write something like this after being host to such grief and communal trauma is in my view extremely poor pastoral judgement

I am NOT a proof-texter -- the Bible is vast and made up of LOTS of different perspectives -- that's why it's so challenging (and rewarding) to read and interpret responsibly, which I don't think Rev. Lose did here.

4) also Jesus going to preach in his home synagogue and those present getting super angry at him (Luke 4)

3) He readily quotes Romans but ignore the numerous prophets in the Hebrew Bible that said and did stuff that definitely made leaders uncomfortable! (off the top of my head: Isaiah, especially chap 5, Hosea, Jeremiah, Ezekiel...again just off the top of my head!)

2) Rev. Lose also critiques the tone of his colleagues' letter and says that it "[implies] that anyone who does not agree with the petitioners lacks moral vision and courage."

1) Advocating a specific position on an issue of public policy is not inherently partisan. If your church's congregants have that perception, then a) they are probably feeling called out OR b) you need to prioritize education around the church's history and role in affecting social change.

A lot of Minnesotans need to read this.

"Black people are tired. Not metaphorically tired—actually tired. The kind of tired that turns every group chat into a mix of gallows humor and emotional triage."

I write about white ignorance and how exhausting it is to hear white ppl insist "this isn't who we are, when it's ALWAYS who we've been.
White People’s Performative Ignorance Is Exhausting—Opinion
Disbelief over authoritarianism in America isn’t a cutesy personality trait. It’s a confession: You haven’t been paying attention.

Gonna be thinking about this lede for a minute.
(RNS) — Last month, the Rev. David Black stood in front of a Chicago-area U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement facility and spread his arms wide. Adorned in all black and wearing a clerical collar, the pastor looked up at a group of masked, heavily armed ICE agents on the roof and began to pray.

“I invited them to repentance,” Black, a minister in the Presbyterian Church (USA), said in an interview. “I basically offered an altar call. I invited them to come and receive that salvation, and be part of the kingdom that is coming.”

But when Black began to lower his arms a few seconds later, the agents responded to his spiritual plea by firing pepper balls, or chemical agents that cause eye irritation and respiratory distress, video footage shows. One struck Black in the head, exploding into a puff of white pepper smoke and forcing him to his knees. Fellow demonstrators rushed to his aid, and as the pastor rubbed his face in pain, the agents continued to fire.

“We could hear them laughing,” Black said.
