Claira turns one today.

A year of smiles that light up the room - and everyone in it.

A year of weaving herself around the hearts of everyone she meets.

A year that went by in a blink. And makes us wish we could slow it down just a bit.

As I stare at the windblown textures at my feet, I’m reminded that every season, even a snowy winter, has any number of small moments of joy.

And that those small moments really are the big ones.

Eat the damn candy.

Because life is short.

Because we all deserve an occasional moment of sweetness.

Or a simple smile.

It's a momentous day in technology history, as Australia's social media ban for kids under 16 goes live. My latest article, questioning whether bans cause more harm than they try to solve, is now live.

Will Australia’s social media ban actually work?
It isn’t every day we wake up to history, but today, December 10th, 2025, will eventually be remembered as such. Because this is the day…

The skies have been relentlessly grey of late, so I’ve reached back a couple of months in search of some colour.

Maybe this is about the weather. Maybe it’s about much more. Maybe we all need to dig down to find the tones that reinspire us.

I’ll often stand on the street below and wonder if anyone ever uses their balconies.

I want to imagine they do, but they seem more suited to convenient patio furniture and bicycle storage than anything else.

Maybe if they came with parachutes.

Since it was a busy day for us yesterday, it was a busy day for her, as well. Hence the toe beans.

I don’t think she moved from that spot all evening, and I wasn’t about to interrupt her dog dreams.

They looked like happy ones.

We often come across some fairly abstract scenes as we go through the paces of our otherwise ordinary lives.

Because wonder lurks in the corners we’d typically ignore.

And anything can be extraordinary if we choose to look through the right lens.

The biggest bird sits on the highest tree beside a remote lake, scanning for whatever might happen next.

Maybe she knows us puny humans have named this place Eagle Lake. Maybe she can read a map. Maybe she appreciates geographic irony.

Probably not.

It’s that season once again, where the warming sun plays tug-of-war with winter’s chill.

And if we keep our eyes open, we might be in for a bit of a show.

A reminder, perhaps, of the simple joys waiting quietly just outside the front door.

Do you ever just stare at a tree and wonder what it’s thinking as it reaches for the sky?

I highly recommend it. Maybe there are no answers to be had, but that’s not really the point of this exercise, anyway.

Deep in the woods, a narrow, rocky path winds its way down toward the river.

I can feel its loosely set rocks through the soles of my shoes, Mother Nature seemingly encouraging me to slow down and enjoy the journey.

This tree is either dead or waiting for life to return in the spring. Or maybe it’s somewhere in between.

I’d like to imagine that whoever stops to check in here has their own story to tell.

In the dying hours of a month best described as grey, the dark skies open up and cover the ground with a blanket of white.

So we follow strangers leaving tracks in their wake. And wish those whose hands are on the wheel a safe journey.

On an ordinary Saturday night grocery run, the cream cheese display calls out to me.

So out comes the camera, of course.

I get stares from strangers. My wife walks away in embarrassment.

But our next breakfast promises to be epic.

Ancient factories don’t always give up their secrets without a bit of effort.

So we step into dusty stairwells, under brick walls eroded by time, and grab on to cold steel polished smooth by generations of now-vanished workers.

And we listen for the echoes.

Intense snow squalls raked our region all night and painted it white. So please don’t mind if I search for colour on this dim morning.

This Grumman HU-16 Albatross trains the next generation of test pilots and flight engineers. A legend, right in our own back yard.

On the first day of November, I’m driving through the countryside. The skies are having a bit of a hissy fit, ominous clouds racing overhead, pushed by winds I can feel through the wheel, painting the farmland below something fierce.

So I park the car. Just because.

Where we find a tiny moment of wonder that reminds us there’s a bright side to the cold, snow, and murk.

So we engage in some guerilla driveway photography before the snowbrush comes out.

I hope you find your icicle today, as well.

A month ago, fire glowed in the tones at our feet, in the remaining leaves that still held onto their last wisps of colour despite the inevitability of all that surrounded them.

They were a defiant bunch, weren’t they?

On an unseasonably warm September afternoon bike ride, I come across this trio of Canadian Geese hanging out in a drainage pond.

I only have my smartphone, so I grab one pixelated mess of a photo before the three angry birds promptly swim away.

Maybe next time.

The sky was in a bit of a mood last night, splattering herself with random colours and textures long after sunset.

Just as soon as the chaos reached its peak, it began its just-as-rapid fade into darkness.

So I just stood there on the damp, soft grass, and stared.

When tiny frozen miracles are playing out at our feet, the least we can do is look down.

Soon enough, the morning sun will rise and render this scene a memory.

So out comes the camera. Because we never know when the next miracle will occur.

All of this is temporary.

The reflective waters may or may not continue to flow. The trees will eventually fall. The entire valley, carved out by these same waters over millennia, will eventually morph into something else.

So we hold onto the ephemeral.
