NEW: Vancouver progressive party @onecityvan.bsky.social has chosen their mayoral candidate for this year’s municipal election. William Azaroff @wazaroff.bsky.social has been an impressive leader in non-profit housing, and seems to have good city-building instincts. I look forward to his platform.
Very important proposal for bus signal priority in Vancouver by Mayoral hopeful @wazaroff.bsky.social running for @onecityvan.bsky.social. Transportation equity means prioritizing transit that’s moving a LOT more people in a lot less space. That’s ironically better for EVERYONE, including drivers.
William Azaroff, who is seeking OneCity's nomination to run for Vancouver mayor, is proposing city-wide coordinated traffic signals that could cost up to $200 million. 🚦

It'd also enable extensive signal priority for #TransLink buses. #vanre #vanpoli

Here's a fun chart I made, documenting the number of letters in favour of every public hearing proposal in Vancouver over the last 12 months.

Only about 1 in 5 rezonings generate any real positive feedback, but the Olympic Village School eclipses everything out.

Even the mighty sauna.

I understand why people are exhausted by AI hype, and why those of us squarely in the corner of "human dignity uber alles" see AI doomerism as self-serving hype, but I *really* think people on the left broadly need to start thinking seriously about the possibiltiy of the hype being...true.

Better yet, why does a provincially funded school need municipal approval at all?
Tonight, Vancouver council will have a public hearing for a school 19 years in the making

There's some community opposition to the project — but there's also the bigger question of why it takes the provincial and municipal governments 19 years to approve a single school

This better pass unanimously.

We lived in Olympic Village 10 years ago and left when our daughter was 3.5 because of the lack of a school. Every kid she went to daycare with left that neighbourhood.

Build the damn school already!

I’ve spoken with hundreds of @onecityvancouver.bsky.social members over the last few months. One sentiment comes up again and again:

Somewhere in the last ten years, people stopped believing Vancouver could actually build anything anymore. 🧵

EPA to repeal its own conclusion that greenhouse gases warm the planet and threaten health
Known as the endangerment finding, the decision is the legal framework that allows the EPA to regulate emissions. Its reversal could upend many climate change policies.

It's such a sad comment on the state of our city that NIMBYs are organizing to fight against an ELEMENTARY SCHOOL.

So please take 2 minutes to write in *by Thursday, Feb 12* and say YES to the Olympic Village school!

I have easy step by step instructions on my blog:

Cutting EV targets and public transit isn’t climate action.

It’s climate sabotage.

With a real public transit plan, we can deliver better for people and the climate.

Britannia pool random debris fell from the ceiling into the pool today so they just closed 3/6 lanes and left the debris where it is😅 quality experience in Ken Sim's Vancouver
as a habitual user of vancouver's pools, rinks and gyms I second this report. there's no pool in my neighborhood, and I have to travel half an hour to even get to a pool built in this century. my usual one (Britannia) is perpetually undergoing emergency repair & has mold in plenty of disused corners
Majority of Vancouver rec centres, pools and rinks in 'poor' condition with no funding plan: audit
The 46 recreation facilities reviewed in the audit have a combined replacement value of $2.1 billion, but face a $33 million annual funding deficit
