It may sound like an exaggeration to say Weinhagen "bought Frey his strong mayor powers" but the Minneapolis Chamber of Commerce was the 100% sole funder of the PAC that campaigned for the strong mayor charter change in 2021.
Thank you Soren.
This is a MAJOR issue that is preventing accountability. I will work with the mayor on the policy they need to wrest control of MPD from those maintaining the violent and unaccountable status quo!

We need new leadership who are willing to fire officers for shielding wrongdoing
Minneapolis City Auditor Robert Timmerman: "Great resistance" from MPD in cooperating with after action reviews, even after speaking with "well over a dozen senior leaders to explain... the requirements of them and their staff to cooperate."
It's good to see the city looking into this, and MPR covering it. It would be great if the state legislature could at least get out of the way and let cities of the first class have more options. Propery taxes and sales taxes tend to hit those with less income the hardest.
Facing increasing dependence on property taxes to cover the costs of city services, Minneapolis is exploring other ways to raise money. The Minneapolis Board of Estimate and Taxation was briefed on a study by city staff, which took into account possible new revenue sources.

OMG. Money is absolutely corrupting our local elections.
screenshot of text message circulating among college students where a guy who is working for a frey-supporting PAC asks someone to get people in their frat to "vote and engage in the election" to get paid $350 for 3 hours of work, and if they win, they'll get a bonus

"it'll look good on a resume."

In Minneapolis, a network of big $ political committees—All of Mpls, We Love Mpls, and Thrive Mpls—share donors, staff, and messaging.

In July, We Love Mpls was cited by the Campaign Finance Board (CFB) for violating disclosure rules.

Here's why all of them could be in violation of MN laws. 👇

irene fernando’s questions to jacob frey that remain unanswered about mariah samuels’ case -
You are correct.the strong mayor charter change seems to be being abused to allow Frey to amend it (snd sny policy he wants) on the fly. With dept heads only accountable to him, he gets away with it.
And I still believe it could work.

New episode! We try to tell the story of Jacob Frey, from candidate to city councilmember to mayor to successful disaster: millcityhall.com

Come for the analysis, stay for the stories about bloody nipples, the BAC, and “why is IF capitalized?”

This is part 1 - expect part 2 next week
This was an option I considered when dismantling the federation's MPD appeared to be on the table: contract with neighboring law enforcement agencies for essential service while we rebuilt a democratically controlled humane safety system. I was not considering prosecutors at the time, though.
Worth the read. Likely true and sounds consistent with whT I know of the man I worked with in city government for 8 years.
2/ A question I ask every mayoral challenger is “why are you running?” People who run against Frey face an avalanche of $$ & elite wagon-circling. It’s no fun. Policies motive, and undoing injustices, but there’s often something they’ve experienced that make getting into the arena unavoidable.
$600 is the maximum contribution allowed for an individual to make to a city council member in an election year.
apparently when questioned about accepting landlord money from 110 grant resident, elizabeth shaffer says “it’s only $600.” if that’s the case, why not return it? it’s only $600. make a show of it, rejecting money from this slumlord who gave half a million to trump. tell him you reject his values
Another step backwards towards autocracy proposed by the charter commision. None of them are elected and it appears that democracy is not something they have much confidence in.
POWER GRAB: 6-5 majority of commissioners on this work group say council shouldn't get a confirmation vote for mayor's picks for directors of public works, community planning/economic development, civil rights, health, emergency management, regulatory services, assessor.
It could help bring single transferable vote but I am sure it will be close and the field is competitive.
Adam Schneider is as progressive as the come. He is also running at large and is Green Party endorsed. Consider voting for him and help keep small parties alive and influential in Mpls.
I recommend candidates live at least 3 to 5 years in a community before deciding to seek office representing the people there. Developing meaningful relationships and authentic love for the people there should come first.

I've been thinking a lot about Annie Young lately. For those who don't know, Annie Young was a 7-term MPRB commissioner, an advocate for environmental justice and the co-op movement, and a voice for all those in Minneapolis fighting for a cleaner, kinder, and more just city... 🧵

Annie Young was a Green champion for decades, serving both in elected office and directly with community, and we're excited to support Adam and see him continue that legacy on the Minneapolis Park & Recreation Board!
