In U.S. high schools, the age of the book may be fading.

Many teenagers are assigned few full books to read from beginning to end — often just one or two per year, according to researchers and thousands of responses to a reader survey by The New York Times.
Kids Rarely Read Whole Books Anymore. Even in English Class.
When teachers do assign whole books, they often choose from a stagnant list of classics.

On @cinapse.bsky.social is my rapturous rave of @realgdt.bsky.social's NIGHTMARE ALLEY, presented in a new black-and-white Extended Cut that finally makes it feel like an unearthed noir classic, unbound from the Hays Code morality of previous adaptations.

The first time I went to Sundance it surprised me that Robert Redford still did a press conference every year at the beginning of the fest. What he started had been the most important film fest in the country for decades, and he was still there cheering on the new generations. RIP

The erosion of truth is slow, then devastating. Though sociopolitical rather than geological, it's never remade, never returned to its foundations of fact and reality. It's shifts, sows seeds of discontent and hopelessness, and radically reforms our landscape.
