As we’ve noted for a while now, National’s much-touted “Roads of National Significance” programme would bankrupt the nation.

In today’s post, Matt looks at transport minister Chris Bishop’s significant walk-back of the frankly unaffordable RoNS fantasy.

Minister admits RoNS reality is biting – and hard - Greater Auckland
“Whatever the problem, build another road” has been a hallmark of policy from the current government. And we’ve long suggested that is simply not affordable or practical – including just

Restricting the availability of puberty blockers to trans kids but allowing them for cis kids is a blatant violation of NZBORA (1990) and the Human Rights Act (1993).

This will undoubtedly end up in court - very quickly as the subject of a Judicial Review.

But what if everyone in Aotearoa goes to solar…? 🤣
Market operator forced to intervene three times as rooftop solar send demand below zero and issued instructions to big battery owner.

NEW: Chris Bishop used housing money to fund a bridge in his electorate his own Govt had killed off.

Officials were against the move and Labour say he shouldn’t have been anywhere near the decision.

If you are calling Auckland and Manukau City Centres CBDs you are actually part of the problem.

City Centres are that, Centres of Cities that should be operating 24/7 in mixed use environments

CBDs implies you only support a 9-5 office environment that is not central either given how cities are

A discussion last night

“Do you realise that when a motorway to Whangārei gets built, Whangārei District Council will then be responsible for maintaining the existing SH1?”

Penny drop moment.
November 15, 2025 at 5:54 AM
Up in my old haunt, Whangarei, fo a few days. The disparity in incomes up here is smack you in the face obvious. But anyone who thinks a motorway will change that is deluded.
November 14, 2025 at 6:57 PM
SH1 north of Brenderwyns to Whangarei could easily be upgraded to a limited expressway. I would hazard a guess that almost none of the bends nor hills fall outside of expressway standards. Just rebuild the existing road as a 2+1 or even 2+2 where it is easy to do so.
