Racism operates as a system, not a fixed identity. Anyone can reproduce it if it offers protection, belonging or clarity.

That’s why today’s anti-immigration rhetoric comes from a politically and racially diverse mix of voices.

When people are worried about rent, heating, food, survival – the world shrinks.

In that space, simple explanations travel faster than complex truths. Racism thrives not because people are stupid, but because they are under-resourced and fearful.

It's out!

The opposite of racist isn’t “not racist”. It’s anti-racist.

In schools, “not racist” often looks like silence.
Anti-racism is active – it’s what we choose to do, every day.

As #RaceEqualityWeek ends, the question is simple: what will we do differently next week?

The hidden curriculum is about power.

Not just rules or policies – but everyday norms: whose stories matter, what’s worth learning, and the “right” way to learn.

Because it’s #RaceEqualityWeek, we’re sharing posts on racism in schools.
This one is about the hidden curriculum.

Not everything pupils learn is written down.
Alongside lessons, they absorb messages about what’s normal, valued, or seen as “other”.

“I don’t see colour.”
“There’s only one human race.”

Well-intentioned phrases, but they miss the point.

If we choose not to see race, we also choose not to see racism – and that makes it harder to challenge what’s happening in schools.

Since it’s #RaceEqualityWeek, we’re sharing a short series on racism in schools.

Race isn’t biological. There are no different human races.
But racism is real, and it shapes pupils’ experiences every day.
