All my life, I've been told that what I read isn't 'real literature'. I recall doing '1984' for 'O' Grade English (I'm Scottish) and my teacher saying that this was probably the only sci-fi novel worth reading and that it wasn't really sci-fi. 40 years ago - and the establishment hasn't changed.

I like the word, but clearly I’m too thick to know if that should be applied to us, the consumers, or whether that refers to the increasingly reductive narratives in the press. Maybe thats too clever and it’s both.
