The Small Hours is the darkest part of night, right before dawn.

It's also the title of my upcoming vampire novel.
It's funny, sexy, and very, very bloody.

A modern-day splatterpunk.

For me, writing is like the multiple endings of CLUE.

"How it could have happened ..."

and

"Here's what really happened ..."

but all at once, nonstop in my head, forever and ever. And then there are ideas for other stories that try to merge with your main idea like a goopy Cronenberg film.

I decided to try something different and go back in time with my WIP with another character POV. These scenes aren't part of the outlined plan, though it fits with the plan. (My outlines for this WIP aren't too detailed) Just discovery writing to see where I end up, and so far I'm really digging it.

31 DAYS OF HALLOWEEN

Day 15

Andy Davidson's IN THE VALLEY OF THE SUN bled new life into a time worn trope, bringing a fresh spurt of blood into the vampire mythos by embracing everything about the bloodsuckers that scare the hell out of us.

One of the best damn vampires novels I've ever read.

Upgraded to Tahoe on my macmini and now my Apple Music controls are at the bottom of my screen. When the app is fully opened, I keep hitting the app menu bar.

I get it, it's optimized for mobile and iPad now, but why can't people just not fuck with things that were pretty much perfect as they were?

I posted about this earlier today. Threads is basically humorless, paranoid, performative bullshit posters.

As far as my patreon is concerned, I'm on the fence about continuing it as it wasn't getting any traction. I'll continue to support creatives on that platform, but as a creator myself, I'm disappointed in the results.
bobpastorella.com
I'm not into virtue signaling or purity tests, which seems like the majority of posts I see on threads. That and grift. If you've been following me and don't know where I align with things, then you simply haven't been paying attention.

I'm sticking with this place, and my website.
bobpastorella.com
While I'm on threads, I don't like it there. It's for promo only, and it doesn't get that much traction. It's a shame, because the format is more text based, which is 100% my vibe. But the randos there are some of the most performative, paranoid, posters I've seen at any social media site.

It is so inaccurate it's laughable at times. The only reason I'm watching is for the secondary plotlines involving all the things Gein apparently influenced, which are also at times grossly inaccurate.

Day 14

David Fincher has this ability to get under your skin with his films, getting close to the filth and grime and decadence of the world...so close you might need a shower after watching. ZODIAC is one of those films, and this panic inducing scenes is one of his scariest.

Hey folks, this Wednesday the 15th, I'm the guest on @scaresshapedus.bsky.social podcast. I chatted with @awalrusdarkly.bsky.social about my novel debut THE SMALL HOURS and LET'S SCARE JESSICA TO DEATH, a formative film for me that I saw at a way too young age.

MIDNIGHT MASS, Mike Flanagan's homage to vampires and 'Salem's Lot, is one of those rare TV series that fires on all cylinders each episode.

I'm vacation, so expect daily book promo, Halloween stuff, and the usual from me over the next few days, except more than the usual, and now I'm thinking there was probably a better way to say that.

Anyway ...

The new album by The Necks is over 3 hours long. Improvised jazz from a new favorite band of mine.

This is some serious writing music right here.

SUSPIRIA

Argento's classic supernatural film (is it a Giallo? Some claim yes, some claim no. Maybe, but it's all Argento, so it's good.) ranks as one of my favorite films of all time in any genre.
