Data centre developers have been using the phrase "NIMBY" to describe opposition for a while now, including this amazingly skeezy secretive organisation doing intel on data centre opposition (hi guys! you can add this post to your Excel file)

"10a labs", a 'security research' firm employed by the big AI companies has begun collecting information and attacking organised opposition to data centres, framing them as "NIMBYS" and wildly exaggerating claims.

I added multiple fundraisers in the replies. Please help if you can
Folks, Israel is not letting aid in which means Palestinians continue to have to buy food on the black market from Israel sponsored gangs. If you can donate a little money to the fundraisers we're posting, you can keep someone alive. Palestinians wouldn't beg if they didn't have to.
UNRWA has enough food outside #Gaza to supply people there for 3 months, amid desperate need. Our teams stand ready to deliver it.

But despite the #ceasefire, the Israeli Authorities’ block on UNRWA bringing any supplies into Gaza still continues.

Let us get aid into Gaza at the full scale needed.

> “Universities are not tech companies,” Olivia Guest and Iris van Rooij, two computational cognitive scientists at Radboud University in the Netherlands[.] “Our role is to foster critical thinking,” the researchers said, “not to follow industry trends uncritically.”
I was pleased to see @olivia.science and @irisvanrooij.bsky.social mentioned in this NYT article (gift link below). But I wish there was more analysis. Boasts and critiques re: #GenAI were strewn throughout, requiring readers to sort the concerns from the hyperbole. For example… (1/2)

in theory i would like to send out other data (mostly PM 2.5/air quality readings) via a medium like LoRa that does not require internet connectivity, but it seems like doing this in a user friendly way is going to require more customization
i may still be doing something wrong though because it sends out the sensor readings (very) inconsistently
pen used to keep contact because i still do not know how to solder
my latest tinkering lunacy is hooking up this meshtastic RAK19003 + 4631 to a bme280 chip for sending temp and baro pressure data over the LoRa mesh
it would be really funny if this replaced the internet
d'aw, i received my first meshtastic spam

“I am not interested, nor will I ever be interested. I'm 61, and I hope to be able to remain uninterested in using it at all until I croak. ... The other day, somebody wrote me an email, said, ‘What is your stance on AI?’ And my answer was very short. I said, ‘I'd rather die.’” 🫡
Filmmaker Guillermo del Toro says 'I'd rather die' than use generative AI
Del Toro's new Frankenstein adaption reimagines Mary Shelley's 1818 Gothic novel. Frankenstein was like a tech bro: "creating something without considering the consequences," he explains.

I read stories like this and my thought the entire time is “what are you actually doing?” What is the end result here for these hours? Where’s the product or thing that comes out? I am sure they’re doing *work* it’s just like…what is happening day to day

unfortunately it's just another indication of how weak the anti-war movement is... and how shallow a left in an imperialist country is without a real anti-war movement
not saying that people can't be redeemed for previous actions but this guy clearly does not see anything wrong with what he did while deployed... again very different from (the best of the) movement attitudes towards vets in the vietnam era
from what i understand, he got a n@zi tattoo, re-enlisted multiple times, and voluntarily served in Blackwater... he's still a fan of us imperialism even if he's domestically progressive
the 60s-70s attitude towards imperialist soldiers in the vietnam era was worlds more sophisticated than (some) dsa'ers' today
news is still coming in but it looks like U-M's campus cops DPSS arrested and brutalized protesters yet again last night

“Expanding clean energy is central to achieving energy security and reducing Iran’s reliance on fossil fuels.”

Iran is the latest Global South country to go hard on solar capacity — not for climate, but geopolitics and energy security. It’s only possible because China brought down costs so much.
Iran’s energy crisis forces attempt to shift from oil to solar

A US tech bro corp in the US has decided the night sky should go away. They've made that decision for everyone on Earth.

Naturally they've named the first searing orbital array (many times brighter than the moon) after Eärendil, the light bearer, from Tolkien's work

Company's plan to launch 4,000 space mirrors alarms scientists
Reflect Orbital says their light-on-demand idea has generated significant interest from commercial and government customers.
