Good day! We're into the final year of our #Sixties run-down of NME number 1s... so we've split it into 2 episodes.

This week ELVIS'S BACK (again) and FLEETWOOD MAC. Let us know what you think about these songs. Classics or mere ephemera? Does 1969 look forward or back?

Good morning! I took the opportunity of the BEATLES ANTHOLOGY's streaming debut to write about THE COMPLEAT BEATLES, the (imho) far superior Fab Four doc, and why, because of the ANTHOLOGY, it's so hard to see.

Yes this is a nice touch!
Did you guys see they put soundtracks for the series online? (This is Apple Music). Really just playlists, but a nice touch. @stevenc63.bsky.social @pablovich.bsky.social @pavementoyster.bsky.social @johnp69.bsky.social @mychameleondays.bsky.social @nemonihil1664.bsky.social @eggpod.bsky.social

THE ODD JOB (Peter Medak, 1978)
w/ Paul Abbott of Big Beatles Sort Out @bigsort.bsky.social

David Jason wants to kill Graham Chapman (still sore over being passed over for Python?) and leaves a trail of dead coppers, bouncers & racist caretakers in his wake!

It’s great having dear old Nell back on our screens!
As we're in #Beatles #Anthology season, here's a piece of artwork depicting everyone's favourite talking head from the series - dear old Neil Aspinall.

This was drawn by Paul's partner, Lorraine, and some of you may have seen this as part of the wonderful @teatles.bsky.social 'Trumps' card game.

The plot thickens as it works absolutely fine on the other telly!

Tried downstairs without soundbar, TV off and on, all sorts and still just ambient sound where the songs should have been!

I’VE GOT THE HAUNTOLOGY ANTHOLOGY!

Subtitles show it should be some of the BBC tracks, but it’s just ambient ‘outdoors/road’ noise!
So what’s with the editing error in Anthology episode 2? Footage of the bedroom with no music over, just weird ambience?

I know I mentioned about the edits/episode lengths yesterday, but I'm really excited about the restoration work for picture and image. They've gone back to film sources wherever available and obviously used the MAL system throughout. It should make a big difference and I can't wait to get watching!
Watching Anthology and the quality is vastly improved. And a nice touch to add soundtracks (the first of which is streaming now).

You can’t help but wonder why Anthology 4 (the album) didn’t include more from the doc. Kansas City and Some Other Guy at the Cavern being notably absent!

In this week of Anthology Excitement™, you should also be keeping an eye on Jason's feed, because he's sharing some really interesting snippets, interpretations, imaginings...
Beatles bootleg collectors are very familiar with Something take 37, an unused tape reduction featuring parts recorded over later & missing some other significant pieces. Here I've completely remixed it for stereo using tech similar to Peter Jackson's MAL system. Original mono mix in comments.

The wording is: "Apple Corps’ UK-based production team took the original eight longform episodes and cut each episode down to just short of 60 minutes, resulting in a stronger narrative" (in a section titled "An Anthology for a New Generation").

I know it's going to be very exciting having the Anthology on hand, streaming, over the next few days and I think, from what I understand, the technical work on the episodes will be great...

...but DON'T GIVE AWAY YOUR DVDs! The episodes are all going to be standardised to an hour's length.

Our racing-car correspondent Rob suggests that following last episode's "Help Yourself TO MY EYES" from Tom Jones (sort of), he should have followed it up with a cover of the Jackson 5 song "Doctor My Eyes", which takes on sinister tones if you read it as "DOCTOR! MY EYES!"

I’m not feeling as extreme as dear ol’ Steven C, but even since recording today’s episode on Saturday, I have come to the conclusion that the new Real Love is an absolute bafflement. It’s almost like an “Elements Mix” off a Lennon box. Interesting, but it’s not a finished product. A very odd choice.
The 2025 remix of ‘Real Love’ is so poor it actually made me laugh out loud on first hearing. Well done everyone.

Obligatory magazine illustrations. It's weird to read the NME in 1969 and it suddenly be filled with "Elvis! Elvis! Elvis!" again. I mean, Fleetwood Mac looked thrilled about it.

Is he technically a “nepo-great-great-great-grandbaby”? (Look it up, you’d be surprised!)

I remember him being good in a Doctor Who two-parter from 2007!

And a very merry Beatles Anthology day to you all!

I hope you're all enjoying it, but I won't be listening until the postie brings me my CDs. I listened to 1-3 on CD when they came out and, dammit, I'll listen to 4 on CD! (P)
