Spent much of yesterday and today reading this. It’s really quite good. Amongst many incidental virtues it makes the protagonists of the Theory Wars seem rather small. It also contains some good literary bitchery, e.g. W.B. Yeats: “The trouble with O’Sullivan is that when he isn’t drunk he’s sober.”

For the tenth week in a row, Pope Leo used his global platform to call out the Trump administration — this time blasting the president’s plan to cut Europe out of Ukraine peace talks. “Unrealistic and dangerous,” Leo declared. As usual, the pope's remarks went unreported in major US media.
Pope Leo Criticizes Trump’s Ukraine Plan Sidelining Europe
After meeting with Zelenskyy, Leo XIV delivered a pointed critique of Trump’s go-it-alone approach — warning that any plan excluding Europe is “unrealistic” and risks shattering the Western alliance.

What’s remarkable about Scott is that her philanthropy isn’t an effort to offset the moral choices made in earning her fortune, as was the case for the Carnegies et al. As far I can tell, it’s just unadulterated beneficence.
NEW YORK (AP) — Philanthropist MacKenzie Scott increased her donations to nonprofits in 2025, giving $7.1 billion.

When you pay attention to the tons of evidence showing that immigrants commit fewer crimes, pay taxes, and contribute billions to the economy, you see that the problem isn't immigrants. The problem is the people blaming immigrants and spreading lies and stereotypes about them.

Europe, and Ukraine, need to quickly prepare for a future without the United States. Even after Trump is gone, the US electorate has proved that it is willing to empower dangerous, anti-democratic forces at any given time. The US should never be trusted again. And I say that as an American.

Yes, and what if your access to affordable healthcare was considered a right guaranteed to everyone by the government and not a bauble of certain types of employment or friggin club store membership? What then?
Rand Paul on his healthcare plan: "What if you could join Costco? Costco has 44m members and if one person negotiated for all 44 and they bought a group plan like Toyota or General Motors does, they would be the largest collective entity in the country. They would drive prices down by sheer might."

So Alito’s going for the old Bush v Gore “this super-special ruling only applies in this super-special case where it helps our guy” maneuver? Lovely.
