This is happening on Monday 8 December, 2.30 pm, online! It's going to be a fantastic seminar with Dr Ayra Thampuran, Dr Chimwemwe Phiri and @duncanwilson78.bsky.social, who will share short provocations on the topic of consent, followed by plenty of time for questions and discussion #photohist
Sharing again the next online seminar, this time linking our website! empnetwork.our.dmu.ac.uk/2025/11/07/o... While consent always feature in conversations on ethics, how it can be applied or rethought in historical contexts leads to more questions than answers, as we'll see!

'Exiting the market' is such a crap euphemism. It's not like the 'university' will then go and apply all its assets to another market. Those assets (human and non-human) will be dispersed, wasted, destroyed. Un-creative destruction. Which we can't afford as a society.
Chief exec of OfS 'said the OfS believes there are 24 institutions at risk of exiting the market in the next 12 months, seven of which are large providers with more than 3,000 students. There are another 25 or so institutions of various sizes at risk over a two- to three-year period, she added.'
Seven ‘large providers’ at risk of going under in the next year

Universities closing is bad news for many reasons

One concern I haven't seen data on is that those universities w/more low income students are likely greater risk

It might be seen as an accidental consequence but i will have short and long term effects on social mobility and economic grwoth

The other problem with this is that research is a type of spread bet/lottery. You do lots of it and hope some of it pans out. If we had a perfect way of selecting which small bits of science and scholarship we "need", we'd have solved the funding problem. But we don't know this.
'Science minister Patrick Vallance has rejected concerns that focusing on “doing fewer things better” in research will lead to funding being concentrated in larger research-intensive universities from the Russell Group.' 1/3

This might be hard to grasp for British people, but the damage that this and Brexit are doing to the international reputation of British universities is huge. When I moved here 11 years ago, coming to the UK was basically the dream. Now I would never advise international colleagues to come here

Also it's not lost on me that the photo that illustrates the article shows a woman of colour at the forefront
Kathleen Stock has written an article against "abortion permissiveness". She claims abortion requires "justification" saying the state should limit "unacceptable decision-making" by women about their own bodies.

This is who anti-trans activists proclaim as the feminist thought leaders of our time.

None of these men can face the fact that certain revelations mean they should quite simply disappear from public life. Yes, that's right, gone. After what's come out, there is no workplace where you would be a positive presence. Go.
Larry Summers tells @theharvardcrimson.bsky.social
he’s stepping back from all public commitments in light of his messages with Epstein, saying he is “deeply ashamed” and hopes “to rebuild trust and repair relationships.”

He will continue teaching.
