My health. Physical and mental. The former prevents for from being "productive" and my second is impacted by twitter and facebook environments in a very negative way. I'm planning to reduce online time significantly.
I wasn't planning to, to be honest. I am recovering some of the stuff which I may one day use for future threads...

My podcast interview with Stefan Ionescu about Justice and Restitution in Post-Nazi Romania (Cambridge UP, 2024) came out today. He describes how Jews had to sue the state to get their properties back only to have them confiscated by the Communists.

And that's pretty much it. Like I said: a collection of newspaper clippings.
I keep reminding myself I promised a thread on the trial opposing priest Boldeanu and the LICA (future LICRA) with French legal legend Robert Badinter pleading for the latter (and losing). Someday. 18/18
These are from France soir↙️ and Le Populaire (Paris)↘️. Both dated April 20, 1951. I don't have a better resolution for them but they basically report that Iovanovici was getting deported. The church would remain in the hand of Iron Guard-affiliated clergy for decades. 17/
Qui? (leisure-magazine) Jan 29, 1951. More stuff on the beards. This is actually funny. 16/
Le Figaro (right) Jan 16 1951. The journalist can't help commenting on the beards of the Romanian priests involved in the brawl. Iovanovici's prejudice is recognized. "Radek Gratian" is a rendition of "Radu Grațian". 15/
New York Herald Tribune (Europe) Sept 14, 1949. Interesting because it alludes to the French law governing the association of worshipers. Explaining the details would require a long discussion which I'll skip at this point. 14/

Libération (far-left), Sept 10, 1949. 12/
Alger républicain, Sept 10, 1949.
The journalist states that the edifice in Rue Jean de Beauvais is the property of the Romanian gov't. In fact the issue is far more complex and would be settled in court at a later date. 11/

France soir, Sept 9, 1949. Part 1. This article dwells upon the Iovanovici's connections to former Romanian king Carol II. 5/

2) None of the journalists back then know everything we know now about the various characters involved.
Now let's begin with this one. L'Aurore, Sept 9, 1949. The fascinating thing about this one is that it publishes a facsimile of German dated Dec 13 1944... 3/
I will provide some minimal commentary, the thread is intended as a collection of primary sources, but I believe a few remarks are required although they will seem superfluous to some.
1)Some of the journalists reporting on the issue are politically partisan. 2/
Import from my X account (which should be deleted shortly).
Newspaper clippings relating to the 1949 "incident" at the Romanian Orthodox Church in Paris (Rue Jean de Beauvais) when Iron Guard priests (supported by the worshipers) took over the edifice from archimandrite Martinian Iovanovici. 1/
It's not exactly something that is disrupting our lives. And don't get me wrong, if I go for run in the woods near my house I won't carry my ID card in my shorts. If I go to a protest, I would definitely have it on me.
As an EU citizen you are required to have your ID card on you at all times. While rare, failing to provide either an ID card or a passport may get you detained.
