Am I depressed because of what's happening or am I depressed because of the people who somehow didn't see it coming?

Both. It's both.
Today is probably a good day to remember Tom Friedman’s Dell Theory of Conflict prevention: No two countries that are both part of a major global supply chain, like Dell’s, will never fight a war against each other as long as they are both part of the same global supply chain.
My department is offering two fully-funded PhD positions in History for students from the UK.

One is earmarked for students of Black ethnicity and the other is on the History of Race, Health and Medicine.

I interviewed Bruce Venarde about his book “The Miracles of Mary in Twelfth Century France” on the New Books Network this week. It’s a collection of translated sources that is not for the squeemish. And it has dragons. With five heads.

My podcast interview with Stefan Ionescu about Justice and Restitution in Post-Nazi Romania (Cambridge UP, 2024) came out today. He describes how Jews had to sue the state to get their properties back only to have them confiscated by the Communists.

So this arrived today. The cover endorsement from Matthew Stibbe says that it “turns conventional wisdom about the Anglo-German antagonism on its head”. Congratulations @tlgrady68.bsky.social
That’s going to make someone’s CV look much more interesting!
To be fair, this is what my notes on archives often look like too. (I’m not an archivist though, and not writing finding aids)
I love that they read the manuscript closely before designing the cover art! (Congrats, btw)
