A Kerry #painting "Cahersiveen, Main St" I painted because I love right angles. If I’m having a conversation with you, chances are I’m looking over your shoulder, not because you haven’t got lovely eyes but because I love looking at right angles. Let me share a #painting with you. "Goldfinch" I painted for someone's birthday because, well, who doesn't like a goldfinch? Always feels like a treat to see one and some years back we planted a few teasels in the garden to encourage them - it worked. #ArtYear #SpeirGorm #SciArt

Landscape format in acrylics. A European Goldfinch in flight, viewed from the side the bird facing left with its wings extended downwards and slightly forward, fully fanned out with the mid-section of each wing feather a canary yellow, the top part close to the shoulder black, the lower part rendered black with a grey-green shine, and the tip white. The back of the body is fawn with some individual lighter and darker thin strokes. The face is red closest to the bill except for around the eye which is black. To the right of the red is a down broad stripe of white, then one of black followed by white at the back of the head. The bill is thick and a pale yellow. The tail is narrow and extends upwards almost reaching the right edge of the painting. The background is a painterly dark grey-green painted to be suggestive of movement. The painting is not signed.

Anyway, have a #painting "Golden Leaves III" is another in the series that came when I had my little American dog here in Dublin, and we would walk looking for autumnal leaves. After jumping into a pile of them she would look at me wondering why I had done that. #ArtYear #SpeirGhorm #ForestFriday

Landscape format in acrylics with textural marks, on canvas. Against a deep blue painterly sky is a messy network of small branches, the main ones which come out of the bottom left and centre, generally fanning out. They are a rough black with touches of yellow, pale blue, and red, most without any foliage but there are several autumnal leaves, curling and readying to drop, in a cluster in the top left and sparsely throughout the rest of the painting. Each leaf is a mixture of yellows, dark reds, and greens, with some almost white highlights and small very dark shadows, all fitting on a fish-bone pattern if mostly curled a bit. I took the photo before signing the painting.

Hi everyone,

I've been going over our money situation, and here's where I'm at: I still owe about $1300 in back taxes, and I miscalculated my website renewal fee, which is about $360. There's a $240 bill I thought was going to be covered by insurance, too, but seems not to have been. If I keep my website active this month, I'm definitely going to be short on rent.

What makes all of this so tough is that in addition to being functionally unable to work for most of the summer, I was really hoping to be reimbursed by now for the nearly $3000 that we lost earlier this year due to a billing error. But I still haven't seen any of that money, and am worried now we may never get it back.

I'm setting a somewhat ambitious longer-term crowdfund goal of about $2450 for now, with the hope that I can raise enough to make ends meet this month and then start paying off the rest.

Thankfully, my mental health seems to be slowly but steadily improving, which means I should be able to bring in more money next month, but it's been a rough time getting there.

Any donations of any size would be hugely helpful right now. You all have been positively heroic in helping my partner and me keep a roof over our heads, and in being a light of hope for me while I've worked my way out of suicidal depression. Bear God also wants you all to know how sincerely and deeply they appreciate everything you've done for us.

reminder that food is food and if someone is hungry, feed them. don't judge. being food insecure is horrible. some people can't get over the shame of qualifying for assistance. please just be normal about food purchases.

oh, and one really important thing that applies to visual art: if you've picked it up somewhere, you have to discard the assumption that a lot of people have, which is the idea that a very skilled artist never produces a bad painting/drawing

does a very skilled guitarist ever miss a note? YES!

and also, as much as possible, you gotta avoid evaluating your own results WHILE you are doing/practicing your artform

that is to say: do not judge your works while you are in motion, only when you pause

It really does feel, to me, that making good art (not just visual art) comes from doing two things:

spending a decent amount of time learning a bunch of guidelines/techniques/rules for that artform

..then forgetting all that and doing whatever the fuck you want!!

Finished two of the paintings, then I walked into the woods and sang a song to the trees (I did, it was nice)

Then I fucked up, was a bit rude to someone I love dearly. I made it right, but I fell into a spiral again

Hell yeah, that is so cool!! Fantastic job! Your painting has such strong energy and vibrancy, and also the emotion conveyed by the facial expression of that Lich has such depth, I dunno why but I love it.
