Developer: Yeah I reckon the AI coding tools make me about 20% faster

Narrator: The AI tools made them 19% slower
metr.org METR @metr.org · Jul 10
We ran a randomized controlled trial to see how much AI coding tools speed up experienced open-source developers.

The results surprised us: Developers thought they were 20% faster with AI tools, but they were actually 19% slower when they had access to AI than when they didn't.

shout-out to this hand-drawn recycling sign at my local pride festival. I love how you can tell that they drew the first two right angles before realising that three right angles does not make a triangle

We don't think the interim guidance published by the EHRC and pushed by Bridget Phillipson is lawful.

So today we've started legal proceedings against them.

Exciting news! After years of work, my research paper has just been published. It shows that adding a layer of gravel at the bottom of a plant pot really DOES improve drainage.

This article perfectly captures a vibe I've had but haven't been able to put into words. Large language models talk like psychics, and that's why people get drawn into believing they're really "intelligent".

A story about #disability discrimination:

In November, me and my friend made a train journey, as we often do. We were both using wheelchairs, so we booked passenger assistance in advance (as is recommended). We were told the wheelchair spaces on our trains had been reserved for us.

I did a sympathetic restoration on this very well-used stocking by adding a lining, and reinforcing damaged spots. Now its life is still visible on the outside, but it's strong on the inside and shouldn't fall apart any worse.
