shout-out to this hand-drawn recycling sign at my local pride festival. I love how you can tell that they drew the first two right angles before realising that three right angles does not make a triangle

Then just staple-gunned about five layers of coarse hessian fabric onto it. It will be easy to replace the fabric when it gets worn out.

The wood is attached to the side of the mantelpiece using command strips so I can take it off without damage.

I laser-cut the wood pieces using a slightly modified 'OpenBox' template from boxes.hackerspace-bamberg.de, then wood-glued them together.

I made a space-saving scratcher for my friend's cat Rosa to use when she visits

The most exciting thing about this for me is that it's stretchy enough to use on jersey! Zigzag machines were introduced right around the time hand cranks were abandoned, so this is the only type of hand crank machine that can create such a stretchy seam.

This machine doesn't have a bobbin under the plate, so instead of a lockstitch it makes a chain stitch with an interesting loopy pattern on the wrong side.

Bonus video of it in action (sound up for lovely clicking mechanisms!)

And finished! It's not perfect, but this was the first time I've ever done work like this and I'm really pleased with it.

Masking removed and ready to reasemble.

I knew I couldn't match the original colour, and didn't really like it anyway, so I repainted this nice bright green. I used a rattle can of enamel suitable for metals. It took about 5-10 coats with sanding in between (and what felt like endless waiting).
January 23, 2025 at 7:57 AM
I prepared the pieces for painting with masking tape on the large areas and sacrificial blutack to plug the screw holes.
January 23, 2025 at 7:57 AM
Then I stripped off the flaking paint. Just many rounds of applying paint stripper, waiting, scrubbing, and repeating. Eventually got it all cleared off though. Then sanded down all the rust spots too.

To do the metalwork, I first disassembled everything. It was nervewracking but I took lots of photos so I'd be able to retrace my steps later. It mostly came apart without trouble, although I had to hammer the handwheel to get it off.

Then varnished them with several coats of oak-tinted polyurethane gloss. The finish is a little bit uneven but I'm satisfied.

I started with the wood. I ordered the base piece cut to size (don't have tools to do it myself).

For the table, I laser-cut layers of 2mm plywood in slightly different sizes to create the right profile in the sides of the slot. Here it is before and after sanding the edges to nice curves.

I got this ~1950s mini sewing machine when someone was giving it away locally, and I've just finished restoring it. Here's a quick before and after, lots more process details in the thread...

the makerspace printer has been jamming a lot lately, so we decided to print a reusable sign for when it's not working. it jammed at the perfect point while printing the sign so we laminated it and now have the best out of order sign ever made

I did a sympathetic restoration on this very well-used stocking by adding a lining, and reinforcing damaged spots. Now its life is still visible on the outside, but it's strong on the inside and shouldn't fall apart any worse.

Throwback to these third-generation sashiko repairs I did. It was a couple of years ago and some of them are still intact now. :)

I don't post much about it here, but I work as a researcher and grower of tropical tradescantia plants.

I hold the UK national collection, breed new cultivars, and sell online. I write about identification and naming, plant care, and fact-checking at tradescantia.uk. (Socials on the contact page!)

My friend's cat Rosa visits a lot. She's very grumpy, but she's 15 now and mellowing a bit in her old age. The third pic is her playing with a puzzle feeder that we designed and 3D-printed.
