The analysis of the 2024 Parochial Report data is out.

I helped lead the overhaul of the form and it is SO COOL to see that come to fruition in new insights and findings!

Check it out for yourself! www.episcopalchurch.org/wp-content/u... 🕯️

The most beautiful moments of this #NoKings Episcopal Church protest outside of Grace Cathedral came when the cable car operators were ringing their bells long and loudly in solidarity as they were passing. They know how to ring a bell! ⚓️
Here is our bishop, Austin Rios, leading us in songs of protest and faith, in front of Grace Cathedral, San Francisco for #NoKings day. ⚓️

Okay so a I have a true little story about how the episcopal church funded the local BPP chapter’s ambulance program and all I’m saying is, Episcopalians: they may surprise you!
you fucked around and now the Episcopalians are doing memes. are you happy now. are you
My diocese (California) is having convention on No Kings Day 10/18 — obviously planned way before anyone would have known, so no criticism intended. I am curious how many other Episcopal dioceses have conventions that day. ⚓️

Side note: lest you think this is a one-off, a sizable group of Catholic nuns, priests and lay leaders have announced plans to do the same thing — offer communion to detainees in the Broadview ICE facility — tomorrow.
NEW: Clergy are at the Broadview, IL ICE facility today — where clergy have been shot w/pepper balls in recent days.

UMC minister Rev. Hannah Kardon, one of those shot w/pepper balls in the past, among those asking to give communion to those detained. Attendees (who sent photos) say police declined
The cats who come to church to be blessed on the Feast of St. Francis of Assisi are made of different stuff (than my cats are). ⚓️

This piece has commentary from the priest and deacon of St. Matthew's Episcopal Church, who were witnesses ⚓

(Pray for St. Matthew's; for the man arrested, witnesses, and all people who are targets of violence; for those who do violence to repent and be healed)
NEW: ICE agents violently arrested a man in a busy Hyattsville, MD intersection this week, at one point brandishing guns and pointing them at bystanders.

I spoke to multiple witnesses—including a local priest whose church is a sanctuary for undocumented people: www.thehandbasket.co/p/ice-agents...
She could hardly believe it when she sat down and noticed the name. So @kmumey.bsky.social -- a physical copy is being carried back across the country to you!
We used a piece by @kmumey.bsky.social on our bulletin cover (she graciously gave permission after I, a total stranger, reached out). And GET THIS: a member of the parish where she serves in Virginia was visiting family members, who happen to belong to our congregation in California!
Hi Kate, I just ordered a beautiful print from you, your work is awesome. I would also love to use one of your pieces for a bulletin cover at St. John's Episcopal Church in Oakland CA later this month. Is there an easy way to get in touch with you?

A really great video by John Green that some of my friends in the Narthex ⚓ might enjoy.

2 showers for the whole group, so much negotiation required. Kids go at night, adults in the morning. I believe one bro ended up going before, and one after. True learning going on 😆
We are having a rich learning experience about the people who grow our food on our youth service learning trip, but also the chance to overhear classic phrases like, “bro, are you showering before or after Compline?” ⚓️

One more thing about this: If you're wondering why you're not seeing much coverage elsewhere, it's likely partly because I was one of only two credentialed press covering this — the other was a videographer, along with some non-credentialed press.

Relatedly: hire more religion reporters.
Full story on the arrest of Rev. William Barber and two others as they prayed in the U.S. Capitol today:

Van Hollen (an Episcopalian) discussed the potential leverage he brings to this situation in a separate interview (next skeet): "Congress has to approve funding from the U.S. to El Salvador, and I'm not gonna support one penny if this Marylander continues to be illegally detained there."
Maryland Sen. Chris Van Hollen is flying to El Salvador to push for the release of Kilmar Abrego Garcia: "I hope to have the chance to actually see Kilmar and see what his condition is."

The Maryland senator previously said he would travel to El Salvador if the Abrego Garcia was not released by midweek.

Apologies to all for the delay. I was distracted by news of a very sick squirrel on the church patio (obviously). These were indeed the winners!
