가끔 동네에 지역 예술 축제가 열려 다양한 금속/도자/미술/유리 공예를 전시하고 판매하는 부스가 세워지는데, 가장 마음에 든 것들은

- 낡고 오래된 악기나 카메라 등을 업사이클링해서 예쁜 램프로 만든 부스, 🪕📷💡

- 역시 낡고 오래된 물건을 재미있는 로봇으로 개조시킨 부스, 🤖🦾

- 그리고 빈티지 시가 박스로 기타를 만든 부스였다. 🚬🪕

AI 시대에 내 구시대(?) 능력을 어떻게 새로운 시대에 적응시킬지 고민하는 나날이라 이런 게 더 끌린 걸 수도.

Classes are done and final projects are incoming -- so many interesting drawings, alternative endings, games, music composition, photo essays, podcasts, video essays and many more that each represent the student's understanding of Korean film -- looking forward to seeing all the finished projects!

종강! 2026년 8월까지 휴강!

우리 학교는 테뉴어/승진 전에 안식 학기를 한 학기 신청할 수 있는데, 안식 학기를 2026년 봄 학기에 쓸 예정이다. 그렇다고 해서 애리조나에 없는 것은 아니다. 수업에서만 잠시 해방될 뿐, 2월 말에 있을 학과 행사도 여전히 내가 준비 중이고, 5월까지 테뉴어/승진 관련 자료도 다 제출해야 한다. 확정된 학회/행사도 여럿 있고, 다른 학회/행사도 조율 중이고, 태용이도 보러 가야 하고... 애리조나에 베이스를 두고 다른 나라와 도시를 왔다 갔다 할 예정이다. 바쁘게 지낼 한 해가 기대된다.

if your press asks for names, give 6 to 8--NOT the biggest, most senior stars in your field. None of them will do it. part of the problem is that the ppl best poised are "mid-career"--i.e. have a book, tenure. TWIST: the mid-career folx, IF THEY EXIST, are so fucking overloaded I can't even tell you

i just reviewed 50+ applications for an arts award and most of them were written by chatgpt. And then the other reviewers said they put them into Gemini to rank them. At a certain point, if everyone is giving their thinking entirely over to AI, why are we even bothering with any of this anymore?
very media era gets the fabulists it deserves. If Stephen Glass, Jayson Blair and the other late 20th century fakers were looking for the prestige and power that came with journalism in that moment, then this generation’s internet scammers are scavenging in the wreckage of a degraded media environment. They’re taking advantage of an ecosystem uniquely susceptible to fraud—where publications with prestigious names publish rickety journalism under their brands, where fact-checkers have been axed and editors are overworked, where technology has made falsifying pitches and entire articles trivially easy, and where decades of devaluing journalism as simply more “content” have blurred the lines so much it can be difficult to remember where they were to begin with. Freelance journalism in 2025 is an incredibly difficult place to build a career. But, it turns out, it’s a decent enough arena for a scam. On their website, Outrider says they pay $1,000 per article. Dwell’s rates start at 50 cents a word—a fee that’s difficult to justify if you actually want to interview 10 of the top designers in the world, but a healthy payday if you only need to enter a few words into ChatGPT.

Really important to stress that the Crown Jewels of the US higher education system were never the Ivies or elite SLACs (other countries have equivalents of these) but the well-funded, large, cheap, and excellently staffed public state university systems bringing high quality education to the masses.
