So, hello new followers. I mostly post unserious takes on public law, occasionally changing it up with slightly serious takes on public law. Sometimes I incorporate the occult into these takes. Welcome

What have you got against the words "Writ of Error Coram Nobis" splashed in a hideous font across 200 pages of pure fantasy dressed up like a skeleton argument, Jacob?
anuragdeb.bsky.social
I find it interesting that "prerogative writs" as legal remedies at some point became completely untethered to the prerogative. The Indian Constitution empowers the superior courts to issue what used to be prerogative writs. It doesn't define "writ" and it certainly doesn't create a prerogative.

If judges were good historians, they would not be judges 😌

We had a good historian on the UKSC who nevertheless did not use his historical skills in his job. The two sometimes run unexpectedly parallel but never intermingle by design. And nor should they. Ever.

Good Lord, a lawyer? Acting in their clients' best interests no matter who the clients are? What a story 😱

Jokes aside, tarring lawyers with the characteristics of their clients has a dark history in Ireland.

Is there a barrel bottom that hasn’t been scraped yet in the determined drive to attack the character and professionalism of the Left candidate who’s doing well in polls? Of course Catherine Connolly BL acted for clients on a normal disinterested basis!

Shutki as an ingredient in various things. It's a dried or sometimes fermented fish/seafood product from Bengal. So pungent that even a nuclear waste disposal site couldn't contain it. But it's delicious.

Unrelated but can we please use "begging the question" correctly when writing apparently serious things? Yes I know about the evolution of language. And I will still die on this hill.

Ehm...

1) Because it is an integral part of the UK - not an overseas territority etcs., - & UK wide law applies to it

2) Direct Rule is always a possibility

3) Nice to the Conversative & Unionist Party looking for yet another sea border, as that is so popular.

The basic structure doctrine is constitutional law's answer to the ship of Theseus. Those who argue that the procedural validity of an amendment defeats the logic of basic structure don't care much about constitutional substance.

This concludes today's episode of constitutional law trolling.

Terrible news from Manchester. The attacks on Heaton Park Synagogue’s congregation are utterly horrific. Thinking of the bereaved families & those recovering in hospital. Antisemitism, Islamophobia & hatred, based on religion, are despicable. Condolences to Manchester.

The ones that come to mind are all from Indian directors, so not a surprise. Irrfan Khan in The Namesake is one of my favourites. He wasn't Bengali, but his character was, and Khan's English accent (as a Bengali character) was absolutely spot on. Sounded a lot like my dad, even.
anuragdeb.bsky.social
A personal gripe I have with accents being depicted in Western English language films, aside from Irish accents (esp. NI accents) is about accents from South Asia. A part of the world with over a billion people and hundreds of languages does not sound uniform when speaking English. How could it?!
nialloconghaile.bsky.social
Good article. It's a real problem, is that the same for other countries?

Harsh on DiCaprio, who in Gangs of NY had been in foster care in the US since a young child. He even says he's lost his accent in the film.

Shout out for Daisy Edgar-Jones in Normal People

Another nail in the coffin of Slovakia’s democracy. Parliament has today approved a constitutional amendment that enshrines recognition of “only two sexes” (male and female), restricts adoption to married heterosexual couples, and ends the primacy of EU law over “ethical and cultural matters”. 1/4

It's ridiculous that an intervention before the UKSC is being hyped, let alone backed by the Tories:

1 This Dillon appeal is not about immunity, which the current UK Govt has already agreed to abandon.
2 The UKSC thus has no basis to consider these claims.
3 The end.

No, it doesn't. The amnesty *itself* (among other things) is under challenge in the UKSC. Does no one read anything before publishing these days?
