Our fig tree is hosting more than just figs it seems 🦉🪶

Two beautiful Boobook Owls (Ninox boobook) have made their roost in the shady centre of the fig tree. The other local birds were very vocal in their displeasure at this arrangement!

It may not have wings, but you're currently looking at a moth! Specifically, an adult female Mottled Umber (Erannis defoliaria). Adult male Mottled Umbers have full wings.

A little color to start off the weekend – a vibrant monkey grasshopper, Paramastax sp., from Colombia. They really do look like this - no saturation or vibrance added during processing. #bugsky 🐙🌿

The grasshopper has large black eyes, a neon green and yellow face with black markings, patches of bright red-orange on the thorax and abdomen, yellow and black jumping legs, and bits of metallic blue and green elsewhere on the body. It is decidedly not attempting to blend in with the leaves.

The fabulous Eucalyptus Hawk Moth, found down Australia's East Coast can have a wingspan up to 120mm. The orange-red coremata tufts at the end of the abdomen, that release pheromones, indicates this one is a male. #WildOz #moths #AustralianWildlife.

A yellow-collared scape #moth on mistflower in the front garden. This was a new sighting for me, don’t generally expect to see moths in the daytime, though I read they are a common species in North America.
