So I was able to actually capture the tremor on video--this is what my student saw yesterday. It's not always this bad but when I'm trying to do precise things (like typing) it gets more pronounced. The neurologists call it "involuntary abnormal movement" lol

But I also post about Japan. I usually don’t expect a lot from a Hollywood movie on Japan but this was nice. They need to work on shedding “Asian beauty” stereotype and palatable and accommodating female character who conveniently speaks perfect English, though.

By the way people sometimes think I am a Japan studies person. I am not. I am a person from Japan who studies. That’s kinda different.

Japan privatized the post office because it wasn’t profitable. People were happy at first, but recently we found out there were several serious violations of vehicle safety regulations. So now they are delivering without a kind of mid-sized trucks. This is what happens when profit comes first.
The Post Office is a service the government supplies to its citizens. Profit should not be the metric that is used to evaluate it. We do not ask police forces to turn a profit, even though there exist private security firms.
The USPS posting a NINE BILLION DOLLAR LOSS!!! sounds terrible. Certainly worse than if you said "USPS costs thirty dollars per person per year" even though that means the same thing and more accurately describes a government service

International students from Asia who have wealthier backgrounds back home seem to be targeted by this kind of scam as well, and the scammers pretend to be law enforcement, immigration officers, or consulate officers and threaten students that they wouldn’t be able to remain here. It’s a thing…

It finally got us here at USC as well. It’s a faulty bandwagon with an engine powered by bad tequila disguised as biofuels. Also, steering wheel doesn’t work, and there aren’t any guardrails. Where are we going again?

Can we just go back to, like, 2013? When instagram was just an app where people posted pictures of sky or something, and when I was a more careless, ignorant, but maybe happier young person

Honored to present my work at “Historias Radicales” conference at The Huntington this weekend.
I'll be presenting on 1990s Latina/o written publications and their expansive radical imagination, as in their pages, they connected U.S. Latina/o and Latin American readers and intellectual traditions.

A friend who was formerly detained and now deported wrote to us. She is trying to get back on track in her home country and missing her kids and family here terribly. I wouldn’t share what she wrote, but it ends with “Until next time,” and I don’t know, I’m just crying really hard now. I miss her.

December 4 at 10am @ UMich and on Zoom, I'll be talking about the labor & environmental impacts of AI in historical context. Computing's long history of automation & pollution reframes how we understand capitalism in the digital age.

Starbucks @sbworkersunited.org baristas are still on strike at corporate stores nationwide.

In the snow, rain, or sunshine, America’s unions have their backs. One day longer, one day stronger!
Snow, rain, or shine - we're out here on the picket lines ☃️ It's DAY NINETEEN of our national ULP strike.

Our striking baristas in Rockford, IL are braving the weather to make sure Starbucks hears our demands loud an clear: stop union busting and settle a fair contract! #nocontractnocoffee

Does anyone here do freelance indexing, or know someone who does? I've got a manuscript that needs an experienced indexer with a relatively quick turnaround. Message me here and we can talk details.

Little Tokyo Public Library is a great place to work, but they have so many Japanese magazines (surprisingly so up to date) and that’s the problem. I just end up reading them 🥺

If you happen to have quality soy sauce like the insulated ones from Kikko Man (imported from Japan), add some droplets to your mashed potatoes. You’re welcome.

I’m grateful for the camaraderie both in my professional and personal life. I’m thankful that we chose courage, kindness and action, instead of silence.

Likewise grateful for food we have, thanks to farm workers and farmers near and far, from fields in CA to the ones in Japan my families work in.

This helps not only when you’re going through challenges yourself - also helps folks navigate in the library to understand what you’re going through to support you better. Good reminder that we actually can care and support each other
Sometimes I think it’s going to be the librarians who will save us all.

I made Japanese Purin (pudding). Light and slightly eggy and less dense than usual puddings or flan. Traditional coffee shop favorite in Japan. Do they usually come in this big size? No, they come in ramekins. Do I care? No, because I am a grown up woman and I do what I want
