Today marks one year since the Dec. 3, 2024 martial law declaration that rocked South Korea and still reverberates today. What’s on my mind today is the grit of South Koreans who rushed to the National Assembly that night, in freezing weather, to demand a return to democratic government.

Unfortunately, in US journalism it is considered neutral to spread a lie, but it is considered "biased" to call out a lie. So, there is a structural asymmetry that rewards colorful lies with virality.

#PeteHegseth can't possibly believe the guards were shot because they were protecting the community. He can't actually be that stupid. I was teaching at Forest Lake HS when he was a student there, and if he was that foolish, my colleagues who knew him would have said so by now. He's lying.

My military experience is limited to a lot of games of Risk many decades ago, but don't you want to spread your high ranking officers around the board? Putting them all on one square seems like asking for trouble. #hegseth

No for-profit private corporation exists to protect free speech, even as an American value. They exist to make money.

But it's as ridiculous for these execs to think that caving to an authoritarian to lessen the pressure, when it gives Trump more power and will do the opposite.
