What a hard, hard week it has been for so many of the people I follow on this platform. If you're riding the waves of grief right now, please know that you are not alone. (It's important to remember this because grief can be such a lonely feeling.) 💗

This is such a sweet story. Expect to feel all the feelings if you read it (which I hope you will).

Communities need used-book shops.

As the trends in our world are increasingly standardized and entrenched by "predictive" technologies that stifle innovation and reduce human actions into economic categories...

We need a full range of possibilities for readers and communities to explore and share.

I always wear a mask in crowded indoor spaces but tonight I will be doing so *fiercely.* I will be remembering the online friend who died this week as a result of complications stemming from Long Covid. I will be honouring her memory by doing what I can to keep myself and other people safe. Always.😷

“Be realistic.”

I refuse to live in your limited notion of what kind of hope, justice and love is possible in this world. There is a key to let us all out of this cage but it cannot be found until we all agree it exists.

@mehlerpaperny.bsky.social Hello, I think you were interested in hearing ideas for investigative journalism. Here's one: Who is the dark money behind this group working to open up our public healthcare system to more privatization?
I have posted about this for several years, on old Twitter and here too.

Reminder that when you see any media coverage like this, on healthcare wait lists, look for the name SecondStreet. And understand what SecondStreet is and what it's trying to do on behalf of dark money.

See my next post...
“Ontario recorded the highest number of wait-list deaths: 10,634, including more than 9,100 diagnostic-scan deaths where patients died before reaching the point of receiving or being scheduled for surgery.”

I once asked a bookseller at a large indie store how many people would have to buy a book for it to get the attention of the store buyer and cause an additional order and they said: Three.
I see some book piracy discourse, and, to make a positive argument in favor of buying books, your marginal ability to influence what books get published and support the careers of writers you like is massive compared to most other forms of media.

This is cyclical. People complain to the Ombudsman, they investigate & issue a scathing report. Nothing changes. According to the report, by 2028, over 17,000 parental caregivers in Ontario will be over 60 years of age (us included). How is that okay? What is the DSO doing about it? Nothing.

Very sorry to read the sad news about Colleen Jones. 💔

Colleen interviewed my Dad and I when we co-authored a book about curling many years ago; and I had the opportunity to interview her for a story for CANADIAN LIVING in 2014 about a health crisis she had experienced a few years earlier. 🧵

Hearing about the deaths of two truly decent people today. One was an online friend; the other was someone I didn't know well but really liked and respected IRL. What the two of them had in common was an ability to build community and to live in accordance with their values. They will be missed. 😔
