Here's a reintroduction thread because it feels like the right time for one. Here's me, my spousal unit Jennie, and the chef statue at Gelsosomo's pizza in Chesterton, IN. We are NOT a throuple - don't believe every cockamamie rumor you read.

A while back back, I asked Bluesky for random questions about the world. I'm finally sharing some answers to three of them!

Why is cinnamon "hot"?
Why is mint "cold"?
Why does soda fizz more when you add ice? 🧪

Why Does Cinnamon Taste Hot? And Why Does Mint Taste Cold?
And while we're at it, why does soda fizz more when you put ice in the glass?

My third #artadventcalendar piece this year is my 2021 illustration of a burnt Hell Creek forest. Two stem-chickens (not based on a specific taxon) forage in the ash as a lone tyrant passes on the distance. 🪶🎨🐡 #paleoart

#COMPANIONSofCHRISTMAS: Père Fouettard!

Père Fouettard was a butcher and cook whose tavern was visited by three children on their way to boarding school. Seeing their nice clothes, wicked Fouettard assumed that they must be rich, and, being children, would be easy to rob. 1/

Question for paleo folks: I know we have really lovely, elaborate floating crinoid forests on Jurassic driftwood. Do we know whether or not crinoids would have established similar forests prior to that? On floating Lepidodendron or other lycopsid trees, for example?

My Uncle David was my favorite uncle, and if he was still with us I'm sure that never would have changed. I think he *got* me before I got myself.

My Uncle Jimmy was infected in first wave of HIV/AIDS in the 80s. I was just a kid. I can barely remember him. He was fun, and funny, and played honky tonk piano. He was a Vietnam vet. He bought me LEGOs. :) I can remember his laugh.

I miss him.

The new Ze Frank video reminded me about an adaptation found in some entomopathogenic nematodes - using both their own muscle power and static electricity, they can leap into the air and home in on their host, like an anti-insect surface-to-air missile

Fatal attraction: Electric charge connects jumping worm to aerial prey
A tiny worm that leaps high into the air — up to 25 times its body length — to attach to flying insects uses static electricity to perform this astounding feat, Emory physicists have found.
