last night sean was giggling to himself and when i asked what was so funny he said he was imagining a southern mouse in a white linen suit drinking a ‘cheese julep’

I forget what it's even called or who it was originally by, I just recognised the chorus lyrics and cringed at how obvious it was
analgender.bsky.social
Oh also I watched it with my girlfriend so that added to it
analgender.bsky.social
I should give it the benefit of the doubt, plenty of good films with bad trailers out there
analgender.bsky.social
I was thinking during Possession, if they remade this today the couple's affect would probably be much flatter at least at the start, to contrast with the heights of emotion they reach in their arguments. That might be more naturalistic but I don't know if it would be better
analgender.bsky.social
My gf and I were kind of put off of that by the trailer, and its obnoxious use of the old song in the slow, ominous trailer arrangement, but might be worth a watch to see if those parallels are there for me too

I've now seen Possession (Żuławski, 1981) twice and am no closer to understanding it, or my own feelings on it. So all I'll say is, it's very odd that they consistently refer to their young son as Bob rather than Bobby

True. Probably the only bit you can confidently say Piper does better than Russell would have is that fight scene
analgender.bsky.social
Time will prove that this is the worst social consequence of LLMs, actually
analgender.bsky.social
I used to wonder if it would have worked better if he'd stuck with Kurt Russell for Piper's role after The Thing and Big Trouble I'm Little China. He'd probably have been less convincing as a downtrodden everyman than the wrestler, though

Whether it's anxiety, or not having the same time to craft a response, or not vibing with the other person, sometimes I just don't come across as well in person as I do in texts. And you can't really say "I swear I wasn't using ChatGPT before, I just struggle to function socially"
analgender.bsky.social
I do not respect anyone who would use ChatGPT to date for them, or for any other purpose, BUT: I have been in dating situations where my chat is nowhere near as good in person as it was over text. And now I've got to worry about whether they'll think it was because I was using ChatGPT for my texts

you know that critique of ai that says it’s like taking a forklift to the gym and expecting to get stronger? well this bit of that guardian article about people using chatgpt in dating apps kinda proves it correct
Which is why the man who greeted her inside the pub – polite, pleasant but oddly flat – felt like a stranger. Gone was the quickfire wit and playful rhythm she’d come to expect from their exchanges. Over pints he stumbled through small talk, checked his phone a little too often, and seemed to wilt under the pressure of her questions. “I felt like I was sitting opposite someone I’d never even spoken to,” she says. “I tried to have the same sort of conversation as we’d been having online, but it was like, ‘Knock, knock, is anyone home?’ – like he knew basically nothing about me. That’s when I suspected he’d been using AI.”

Rachel gave her date the benefit of the doubt. “I thought maybe he was nervous,” she says. But she’d been “Chatfished” before, so when the gap between his real and digital selves failed to close on their second date, she called it off. “I’d already been ChatGPT-ed into bed at least once. I didn’t want it to happen again.”

You know the 90s anti-consumerism politics that rails against Reagan but can't quite connect the dots and arrive at an anti-capitalist critique? It's that in movie form. I still like it a lot though

One of those cat cafés but the cats are pints and you drink them and talk to your pals and set the world to rights about politics, someone puts The Pogues on and everyone sings along and then you get a one last pint and just make it to the chippy before it closes and everything's great

One of those cat cafes but the cats are puppy girls and you sit on them.

I was about to say "they don't let you make tobacco products this obviously For Teens anymore", before I realised that's exactly what vapes are

The Gamecube remake of the first game is still one of my favourite games, but the voice acting and lines are still not that much better than the original
analgender.bsky.social
Seriously, no one at all has brought it up from that angle? Wild

Can this include what we find valuable about living in the world with other people. Because I don't believe a world with immortal people in it would produce a society I would want to live in

This the kinda shit people say to me in the smoking zone outside the gay bar
Baroque screenshot of a floating green skirt girl in a dark dungeon telling you "You were extracted from our soul. We are insane. It's your fault we became insane." Same girl as before but now she is saying "You want to cut me? That's fine. You probably want to kill me, right? Then kill me. If you killed me, I think I'd be glad."

All I want in life is to persuade everyone, when encountering politics & culture, to ask, "why are we talking about this?" I mean that very literally: anything you encounter on your screens reflects a choice. Someone covered that, talked about that, rather than the many other things out there. Why?

I wish the themes, particularly the English language as the vector for neoliberalism and authoritarian control, had been explicated in a less diffuse way, because that's very much my shit
