There is undeniably a core of racist violent fans among Maccabi Tel Aviv supporters. (Also displayed in Amsterdam last year). It is foolish and wrong of politicians and some of us in the Jewish community to present a public order policing decision about such fans as "excluding Jews from football".
The Tel Aviv derby between Maccabi and Hapoel could not be played today in Tel Aviv as the Israeli fans injured rival fans and the police. The game was abandoned at half-time in January. The Israeli police & authorities have struggled to contain the conduct of fans

The decision to suspend the Tel Aviv derby came after extensive use of pyrotechnics by fans led to injuries among both supporters and police officers.

V late to this (it’s a weekend, family stuff, etc) but..I agree with Ben. Both Katie Lam’s interview about deporting people with legal status (and the way STimes treated it) & the Christian Calgie business are disturbing egs of forgetting that ‘normal on X these days’ is very much not normal
Apropos of nothing, I really do think UK journalists and politicians need some reminding that mass deportation of LEGAL immigrants, particularly those with permanent status, is far more extreme than even Trump's America and would basically place Britain completely on its own among democracies.
Something tragic seems to have happened to Starmer and his renowned forensic abilities as soon as he stopped his legal career, became a cynical high climbing politician, and decided evidence and facts are a little irritating.
Starmer's second favourite football team doing precisely what police were concerned about.

Police announce they have canceled a much-anticipated derby match between Hapoel Tel Aviv and Maccabi Tel Aviv was set to take place tonight 19/10/25 in the city.

It's a shame that this article will not get the attention it deserves.

Your regular reminder that scrapping ILR for people who have come here and played by the rules, which is what Lam proposes here, is a position supported by 3% of the public
Sunday Times interview Tory "rising star" Katie Lam

She is clear she wants lots of legal migrants to be told to "go home" so as "to leave a mostly but not entirely culturally coherent group of people"

(The interviewer suggests she is scrapping ILR or stripping people of it)
The Nobel Committee is too busy laughing at Trump to arrive at my piercing, yet strangely undervalued, observations.

So Lam's views are clearly exceptionally racist in practice, "mostly but not entirely culturally coherent group of people", but also utterly devoid of reality, no International law is not based on a principle of niceness, it's built on a recognition countries aren't.

Lam makes no sense. Her lesson from her grandparents' experiences under Nazism is to create new conditions now for cruelty to immigrants and their families. She has learnt nothing from history. What a pisspoor politician.

Absolutely none of this makes sense. The experience of her refugee parents taught her to be anti-immigrant? The post-war order was built on the assumption of human niceness?
Katie Lam tries to explain to the Sunday Times how her grandparents experience under Nazism informs her view that the postwar institutions forged after the horrors of war, dictatorship & the holicaust won't now work in our times - because "they assume everyone would want to be nice to each other"

Surprised to learn the former adviser to those moderate politicians, Boris Johnson and Suella Braverman holds these opinions on people unlike her.

I genuinely find this very worrying, as someone with settled status! sure, Lam probably won't be home secretary tomorrow, but the mood music is changing, you can feel it, and I just don't trust Labour to fight like hell on our behalf, so unclear where this is going to go
Lam hears "settled status" and "guaranteed by withdrawal treaty" as up for grabs:understood to be temporary "provisional arrangements" which can be transitional and unsettled if and when you want to

That is highly counterintuitive as language of 'settled', as law & as politics of Treaty guarantees.

This -official Conservative policy - is essentially identical to the Reform policy that the Prime Minister described as "racist and immoral" and would "rip out country apart".

Would be good if media and politicians pointed this out .
Lam's proposal is to refuse future grants of ILR but to cancel past grants of permanent status to anyone who is not likely to be a fiscal net contributor, and anyone "who has accessed state support" once they got permanent status. That will revoke pledges to those told this was their permanent home.
I would suggest if a politician works with the workshy Boris Johnson, regularly sleeps at their desk, comes up with hairbrained racist ideas and doesn't understand the world outside corporate finance and party politics, then the bar for "rising star" in the Tory hierarchy is set very, very low.
Sunday Times reports her personal journey includes: Guildford, Cambridge University, (Cambridge Union + Cambridge Conservative Association) + Goldman Sachs + political adviser at No 10 for Boris Johnson.
