There is undeniably a core of racist violent fans among Maccabi Tel Aviv supporters. (Also displayed in Amsterdam last year). It is foolish and wrong of politicians and some of us in the Jewish community to present a public order policing decision about such fans as "excluding Jews from football".

Apropos of nothing, I really do think UK journalists and politicians need some reminding that mass deportation of LEGAL immigrants, particularly those with permanent status, is far more extreme than even Trump's America and would basically place Britain completely on its own among democracies.

So Lam's views are clearly exceptionally racist in practice, "mostly but not entirely culturally coherent group of people", but also utterly devoid of reality, no International law is not based on a principle of niceness, it's built on a recognition countries aren't.

This view is informed by the stark contrast between her idyllic childhood and her grandparents' tales of horror and cruelty. Her paternal grandmother's family were involved in German trade unions and socialist politics.

They fled and hid from the Nazis, enduring imprisonment and SS raids before eventually making their way to England.

"This is a fight in which one part of my family was obliterated and another part of my family risked everything basically to do the right thing and in the end this country saved them and the free world," she says. "That sets the stage for a lot of how I feel about politics."

Our current system of rights and laws was created in the shadow of the Second World War. A committed Brexiteer, Lam believes these structures are no longer fit for purpose. "It was a totally understandable reaction at the time," she says. "Put simply, the international rules-based order is based on the idea that everyone would want to be nice to each other post-war. The reality is that's not true and loads of people will exploit that generosity. If we're not going to stand up for ourselves, we will lose the most precious things that we have."

Much like Jenrick, Lam has been accused of shifting with the prevailing winds on issues of identity and immigration. She certainly shares his unsentimental toughness on the subject.

"Everybody who's in this country illegally I think needs to go home," she says. Indefinite leave to remain is off the table, too. “There are also a large number of people in this country who came here legally, but in effect shouldn't have been able to do so. It's not the fault of the individuals who came here, they just shouldn't have been able to do so. They will also need to go home. What that will leave is a mostly but not entirely culturally coherent group of people."

Lam thinks our citizenship test should be far more taxing and that Britain should leave the European Convention on Human Rights (ECHR) without delay. "For me it's not really about in or out of the ECHR or in or out of the refugee convention," she says. "It's a fundamental principle. We don't owe anybody access to our country other than people that we choose for our own benefit."

Lam makes no sense. Her lesson from her grandparents' experiences under Nazism is to create new conditions now for cruelty to immigrants and their families. She has learnt nothing from history. What a pisspoor politician.

I genuinely find this very worrying, as someone with settled status! sure, Lam probably won't be home secretary tomorrow, but the mood music is changing, you can feel it, and I just don't trust Labour to fight like hell on our behalf, so unclear where this is going to go

Lam hears "settled status" and "guaranteed by withdrawal treaty" as up for grabs:understood to be temporary "provisional arrangements" which can be transitional and unsettled if and when you want to

That is highly counterintuitive as language of 'settled', as law & as politics of Treaty guarantees.

This -official Conservative policy - is essentially identical to the Reform policy that the Prime Minister described as "racist and immoral" and would "rip out country apart".

Lam's proposal is to refuse future grants of ILR but to cancel past grants of permanent status to anyone who is not likely to be a fiscal net contributor, and anyone "who has accessed state support" once they got permanent status. That will revoke pledges to those told this was their permanent home.

I would suggest if a politician works with the workshy Boris Johnson, regularly sleeps at their desk, comes up with hairbrained racist ideas and doesn't understand the world outside corporate finance and party politics, then the bar for "rising star" in the Tory hierarchy is set very, very low.
