When I was young we didn't have much family near us and my dad's med school classmates who had also moved to the states were our extended family instead. Remembering one aunty today who we'd visit over xmas break (wife of dad's friend). She died in the 00's from complications of Crohn's disease.

It’s not true that our wild bear habitat only contains a Billy Bob robot from an abandoned Showbiz Pizza Place. We also put a jukebox in there.

Oh this would be fantastic! The whims of a landlord are a big reason why small businesses struggle to stay in business, so being able to own their building will be a HUGE contribution to their long term sustainability.

I don’t have a particularly common name but there are multiple people around the world who accidentally use my email when signing up for accounts. There’s a guy in Missouri who has been my constant companion for going on twenty years. He’s recently divorced and joining some sort of “karate church”

"Assume everyone I interact with online is struggling with their mental health" has only become a more important guiding principle in the past couple years
My personal guidelines for dealing with people on social media:

Assume everyone is a friend you haven't yet gotten to know.
Assume everyone is struggling with their mental health
Don't promise any emotional labor you might not be able to provide
If someone seems like a hater, disengage right away

I never muted things on Twitter but I have grown and learned. I have temporarily muted "nuzzi" and my feed is way way better now. You don't have to mute it forever. If you need a break from a topic, take a break.

dems should be putting out new “dont follow illegal orders” videos every day, they should be replying to announcements of investigations of dems with new videos, they should be posting at hegseth to not follow illegal orders nonstop

Got a note from an editor saying that they are now a "fan of my work" and would like to see the next thing from me and even though my brain was like "it's probably part of their form letter" and "my next thing is a different style from this" I really appreciated it.

I write full time, have published a picture book that produces royalty checks, and some shorter fiction and poetry that paid small amounts. I also do paid school visits occasionally. This does not add up to a living wage. My husband is my primary benefactor so I can focus on my craft.
I know we know this, but authors need to get better at talking about how they actually make their money. Stop pretending it's from the books.

In self-interest but also general interest, folks: Black Friday is coming up, and small publishers/independent creators will always be a better choice than megacorps.

When the sales drop, please remember that!

Absolutely appalling.
1. In Tennessee, public libraries have closed for up to a week to facilitate a Trump-inspired book purge.

Tennessee Secretary of State Tre Hargett (R) has ordered most of the state's public librarians to remove children's books with LGBTQ characters or themes.
