POLITICO: “.. They referred to Black people as monkeys and ‘the watermelon people’ and mused about putting their political opponents in gas chambers. They talked about raping their enemies .. and lauded Republicans who they believed support slavery.

Weird. I've got a different (not e-) bike with an 8-speed Shimano hub and it's been solid for 12+ years. They're usually pretty reliable!

It's great! Sometimes I wish I had gotten a class 3 but that more of a me problem

Well, it would seem my #WeekWithoutDriving has escalated from errands around town to a long distance multimodal adventure. LFG!

Oh and yesterday I biked to Trader Joe's, but I didn't take pictures. It's the best cheat code for not having to deal with the characteristically-chaotic parking lot...

(But also the parking lot is totally fine if you can just be patient for 2 minutes! www.strongtowns.org/journal/2016...)
Why I Love Trader Joe's Parking Lots | Strong Towns
Notoriously bemoaned, Trader Joe's parking lots are known for their small size, tight spots & limited maneuvering areas. But that's actually a much better model than the wasted space that most grocery...

Happy #weekwithoutdriving! To be honest I was probably not gonna drive this week anyway but hey let's make it official.

I'm going bikepacking soon so today I took the touring bike out for a test/shakedown ride, then (cuz I was tired from the first ride) e-biked over to REI for some supplies...
A Kona Sutra touring bike leaning against a bench next to a multi use path A Cero One e-cargo-bike parked at the bike rack in front of an REI in a strip mall.

The bike rack is that crappy "wave rack" design, alas. Better than nothing I guess. But cities should outlaw these and demand staple/inverted-u or post-and-ring designs.

Whoa, you're right. I missed that because there were definitely people fretting about trees in the original post's article about Montgomery County

I dare y'all to print out a stack of these bingo cards and bring them to the next sidewalk meeting

I would quip that there's not enough *bike* parking, but your picture would belie that claim as well 😅

"The quality of life on this street is perfect as it is [with no sidewalk for kids to walk to school]."

"[A sidewalk for kids to walk to school] just seems like a needless conversation."

"You want young children to be safe, but [I oppose a sidewalk for kids to walk to school]."
Parents drive their kids to school.	I don’t want to shovel snow.	There is already a sidewalk on the other side of the street.	Hardly anybody walks.	You can walk in the grass or the road and it’s fine.
People will walk in front of people’s homes and driveways.	I don’t want a sidewalk on my property.	Nobody told me about this hearing.	Crosswalk signs are ugly.	Parents will park in the crosswalk.
Sidewalks are ugly.	There are very few children living on my street.	Nobody has been killed.	We already pay the HOA for walking paths.	My property value will go down.
I have lived here for 35 years without a sidewalk.	The community does not want this.	Don’t take our front yard.	It’s already hard to park on the street.	Sidewalks are bad for curb appeal.
I used to walk my kids to school without sidewalks.	Kids can use the paths to walk to school.	My taxes will go up.	I moved here because there weren’t sidewalks.	A sidewalk will ruin the ambience of my neighborhood.

I fully understand how difficult it is to remain focused on any one particular atrocity but this really ought to be a serious scandal and people need to pay heavy prices for this

This is what privacy advocates have been warning about for a long time. Locally, despite attempts at a ban Ann Arbor has a facial recognition policy that’s basically “yup, we use facial recognition.” Ditto drones. Countywide, there has been public pushback against ALPRs it’s not settled. #a2council

I spent the week at the police surveillance convention and let me tell you my biggest observation: The name of the game now is consolidating as much information as humanely possible from surveillance devices, the internet, other governmental data, and literally a million other places. 🧵
