In fact it looks like rock slabs we've seen in the US that have broken off in avalanches or earthquakes and then slid down slopes

I'd like to be able to tell you something about this huge solo monolith on the beach at Lækjavik Nature Preserve but there's nothing about it in my #Iceland geology book and my google-fu failed to turn up any geologic information.

A huge lava monolith stands by itself on a black sand beach in eastern Iceland. The slopes of mostly bare lava mountains/hills are visible in the background. The waves are close to the monolith suggesting the it is surrounded by water when the tide is in.

No below freezing nights yet but cool enough that I can get a walk done in the morning without bugs. It was cold enough we've had the heat come on a couple of nights.

I hope so too -- if for no other reason than there's almost nothing to take photos of on my walks. I was hoping that day of rain we had was the end of the drought but we've gone right back to blah, dry days (I think part of the reason Flit is getting in the pond is because the creeks are dry).

He looks like he's trying to figure how to 'attack' that pillow so he ends up on top of it.

The weather has been pretty nice but there's almost no color. I wonder if all the leaves are just going to go straight to brown this year.

Those are great. Of course, any photo with Joey in it is going to be the "best" one but I really love the one at the beaver dam. The colors, the rock ledge, the perfect reflection all combine to lead the eye down the pond edge to its end.

That doesn’t sound too bad, especially if you were able to do it all outside!

It was so beautiful yesterday, so we went out then. (I cooked the turkey dinner yesterday, so leftovers today.) I think tomorrow is going to be warm again, so that might be the last of the season. Here are some photos:

The sky is blue with a few clouds, some of the far leaves have lost all of their leaves, some are still changing to orange. The photo is sort of blurry as it was taken through a protective waterproof case.

A carpet of leaves on the ground — orange and brown and yellow maple leaves are covering the ground under the tree they fell from. There are still some leaves hanging on the trees around the woods, but it is thinning fast. The sun is shining top right corner of the frame.

The tall deciduous trees along the big dam at the beaver pond have almost lost all their leaves. The bank/ground under the trees looks orange from the fallen leaves. The trees are reflecting in the still water of the pond. The sky and water are blue.

The resident barred owl spotted sitting on a branch of one of the shorter trees in the woods that still has its green leaves intact.

Because of unseasonably warm weather we were able to shampoo her outside and use the hose -- so it was much easier than usual -- and the pond smell wasn't very bad which was good.

Hope you are having nice weather for Thanksgiving; maybe nice enough for a cruise on the water.

A commissioned poll shows nearly 1/2 of MO voters oppose the maps

The Dem committee needs over 100,000 valid signatures across multiple congressional districts before the state’s 90-day window expires on Dec. 11 to let voters decide on the maps.

Missouri Democrats have an opportunity to block a new congressional map. They say they’re largely on their own.

Despite relatively little investment from Washington, Missouri and Ohio Democrats are looking to block new Republican-drawn maps through uncertain avenues.

Between Escalante and Bolder on Utah 12 #Stunday #photography #geology #Support_Public_Lands

This road through the Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument⁩, ⁨Utah⁩, ⁨is an amazing drive with many trailheads for some of our favorite hikes. The land, from the Navajo sandstone in the foreground to the laccolith Henry Mountain Range on the left side in the distance, was some of the last land in the lower 48 states of the U.S. to be mapped. The Monument and the surrounding national parks have been places we've loved to hike for over 30 years. An exuberance of dandelions in #Iceland. #photography #flowers

When we were in Iceland last May, the dandelions were in bloom in the South. This bunch of two dozen flowers growing next to a rock was fairly typical. The stems are about 12 inches (30 cm) tall and the larger flowers are nearly an inch and a half (4 cm) in diameter. I don't know whether it is the moisture or the volcanic soil that makes them so exuberant.
