I spent some time early in my career as a German historian, and one lesson you learn quickly is that a desire to understand is not the same as a desire to excuse. I would go further and say that you can't truly condemn something without knowing what you're condemning. It's fake and empty.

I have to keep reminding myself when early modern people are spelling their names all kinds of ways that the only reason my name an DOB are consistent is that I live in a time and place where I *need* to be able to give the same details out every time.
