I am often asked: What is the best telescope to buy for someone just getting into astronomy?

🪐🔭👀

As a theorist, I am absolutely useless and can tell you nothing. HOWEVER, my friend the wonderful @philplait.bsky.social is NOT useless and has great advice & relevant links here! ⤵️

#vss365 (chic) Human skin is *so* last season. This century, all the #chic demons are wearing unicorn-hair toupees and tailored suits over t-shirts. You would not believe how picky they are about their t-shirts. Are they pre-debauched? Despair-scented? Dry clean only? #microfiction 🧵 1/2

Me: I wonder if I can train myself to drink black coffee? It would be better for me.
Also me: Wincing after every sip.

A nice thing about writing is that literally anything in your life can be used as a driver for a story. Social mistakes, embarrassing stuff, failures, world events … can always be turned into an emotional core for art. It’s a layer of protection or maybe a “gotcha” for whatever life throws at you.

Me: "I'm a writer."
Them: "Have I read anything you've written?"
Me, thinking: ...I don't know, I haven't been keeping track of YOUR reading!

(After the first time when I was too flummoxed to have a good answer, I have used it as an opportunity to make them a recommendation.) #WritersLife
What’s the worst question someone can ask after you tell them your profession? For linguists, it’s definitely “how many languages do you speak?”, but I’m curious what else is happening to the rest of y’all out there?!

BCS is a great magazine to read, but also nobody else gives the feedback that Scott gives on stories, and his contracts are author friendly. In a world where that isn't the case, it's worth sending a couple of bucks their way. There's a subscription option if you don't do patreon.
BCS Patreon has fallen below the monthly amount we need to pay our authors a pro rate and our First Readers a worthy honorarium ($125/mo). Sometimes folks need to lower or pause their support; we understand. But less than 1% of BCS readership donates or supports. www.patreon.com/beneath_ceas... 1/3

Last Christmas I gave you my heart, and, here’s the thing, I know it’s the very next day, but I’m going to have to ask for it back. The thing is, it was more of a metaphorical gesture. I didn’t expect you to take it literally. Medically, I need it to live. I hope you understand.

This is true of any ruminant whose diet is low enough in protein. There are videos on the internet of cows and goats casually snapping up baby chickens that happen to wander by. Ruminant molars are sharp enough to give you cuts like a scalpel, they can easily grind tiny birds.
When trapping small birds in nets for research, you have to get them out quick or the deer come and devour them.

Inspired by someone elsewhere, I hereby vow to try to avoid the terms "content" and "content creator," unless I *must* talk about work across so many fields that a generic term is the only one that will suffice. Let's not reduce art, criticism, journalism, etc. to an undifferentiated smear of Stuff.
