He never set foot on the US. He found islands in the Caribbean & thought 5 he was in the "Americas". Over the yrs large groups of the Italian community in the US pushed for a day to honor. I wasn't in around then(I'm old, not that old) but, if he never set foot on the US why was it a holiday for us?
