Shared understanding of how these processes and tools relate to one another supports clear communication, efficient coordination, and, ultimately, cross-jurisdictional collaboration in adaptation.
We demonstrate the similarities of different adaptation planning approaches, offer a generalized process for climate-informed resource-stewardship planning, and clarify how several tools relate to and enhance the process.
However, with the rapid proliferation of processes and tools has come confusion about how they relate to one another and whether or how they can be used in complementary ways.
Climate-change adaptation planning tools have proliferated in recent years, as have processes that integrate those tools into planning.
Excited to share our new paper: Toward a shared vision for climate-informed resource stewardship - doi.org/10.1002/fee....

Despite broad political support, one third of the nation's Climate Adaptation Science Centers will wind down in coming days due to lack of funds.

The Northeast, South Central, and Pacific Islands will be left without actionable science on drought, floods, wildfire, sea level rise and other hazards.
Trump officials shut off funding for climate adaptation centers
A third of the U.S. Geological Survey’s Climate Adaptation Science Centers are expected to drastically wind down and possibly close after Sept. 30.

South Central Climate Adaptation Science Center announced yesterday they are 1 of 3 USGS regional centers that will have to sharply reduce ops on 10/1 due to lack of funding. More details on this - as well as details of increasing tropical threat to the SE US, here: tinyurl.com/36bc86mh

Hugely concerning to see layoffs threatened since April may move ahead at Dept of the Interior. Our Climate Adaptation Science Center colleagues at USGS have already lost 30% of their team from retirements, buyouts and layoffs; DOI has lost 11% on average. Planned layoffs may double these losses.
The Interior Department is taking steps to implement layoffs
After a series of delays, DOI is preparing RIF lists as it looks to implement significant personnel cuts in the coming weeks.

Hope is not a strategy, no matter how much we want it to be.

Placing hope in some possible-but not guaranteed-good outcome that is still over a year away is folly. Show me a plan for now that is based on current risks. Then, show me contingency plans based on predictable bad things happening. 1/

Federal agencies hiding out in a bunker
“What’s happening in the United States is a degradation of democracy... There are attitudes, norms, and values that prevent corruption, and they’re fraying.”

The foundation of science and engineering in America is being eroded, badly.

This does NOT save us money, and it certainly doesn't make us “great again”. It hands the leadership of 21st century to China, on a silver platter.

The USGS Ecosystems Mission Area (EMA) leads federal research on species & ecosystems and houses the Climate Adaptation Science Centers.

OMB spokesperson to NPR: EMA is "obviously irrelevant to science and is exactly the kind of waste President Trump ran on rooting out of the federal government."
This federal program helps track America's ecosystems. Trump's budget would gut it
Buried in the Trump administration's proposed 2026 budget is the near elimination of something called the Ecosystems Mission Area. It's a program that monitors living things and the health of the land...

If you live in the US, you are in greater jeopardy today than you were 6 months ago. So is your family. So are your friends & neighbors. Virtually all the important parts of the U.S. gov't created to protect us are being shut down, gutted, or marginalized. My latest. newrepublic.com/article/1968...
We Better Pray That No Unexpected Crisis Hits While Trump Is President
It’s a world exploding with crises waiting to happen. Donald Trump has made us less prepared for every one of them.

I am so grateful for the amazing things I get to do and the awesome people I get to do them with. I am trying to celebrate every additional day I get at this point. Easier said than done, of course. 😬
I joke this is my trauma project because I started it on Jan 20 and finished it on May 14 (the day before I was rumored to be terminated). It has a lot of anger, anxiety, and grief in every stitch, but it also has joy.
“We have to create;
it is the only thing louder than destruction;
it is the only chance the bars are gonna break.
Our hands full of colour
reaching towards the sky - a brush stroke in the dark
It is not too late
That starry night - it is not yet dry.”

Heartbreaking game for the #Commanders today but what an amazing accomplishment to reach a championship game after a 4-13 season. #JD5 rookie of the year. Can’t wait to see next season. 🏈
