My son (12) is fucking around in a Google doc, doing some free writing. I look over to see that he’s written the following:

“{name of band} is the way to god with the drums”

uh-oh. Looks like someone has passed down a penchant for earnest, if not hyperbolic, music writing.

impossible to describe how it felt in the mid-90s when "Possum Kingdom" was on the radio in good rotation, at work trying to mop up the glass/acid spill of a cartload of pickle boxes crashed on the floor while someone screams "Do you wanna die?" from a speaker cut into the drop ceiling.

we’re knocking on thanksgivings door and I can’t help but think how, last year, I played Counting Crows and A Long December like a fucking prayer.

and in this better-than-the-last year, I see the answer.

Me to my 12-yo: I’m gonna be 45 next month! Do I look old to you or is it just normal because I’m your dad?

Him: You look young! With that face?!

Many thanks for @amsterdamreview.bsky.social for nominating "when the ponds were new" for Best of the Net. The poem is a visual erasure using a page of Walden.

Swapping swooning texts with Holly.

And swapping texts about a 25-year-old Wilco concert with my pal Luke.

Really coming into my own.
