There’s not a day goes past that I don’t miss Tony Bourdain, great man, great friend, great writer. Nothing can make up for the loss of him, of course, but it’s wonderful to hear his voice live from the page in the compellingly brilliant Anthony Bourdain Reader edited by Kim Witherspoon.

It is true that the country seems to be becoming a tawdry mess of tatty one upmanship poppy wearing, vape shops, piss filled bottles along the hard shoulder (saw loads on m56 earlier) & twisted shabby flags. Overall it’s a tatty fucken mess tbh.

Bro lives there & he’d told me this! & let’s not forget it’s our tax that pays to get them down. So wasteful & as you say tatty. My experience with council was poor…I rang (never rang council before) & I got a bad vibe from the miserable cow who was combative. So I wrote to my MP! I did get a reply!

Exactly. Each year it seems to gather pace. I’m astonished really coz barely anyone at all can remember it & that’s not to say we should forget but by actions not a fucken poppy EVERYTHING & ANYTHING.

Just knocked up a wee thing for Blackpool council

Hi

On Monday evening, my husband and I drove to Blackpool to see the illuminations. Its something I've done many, many times over the years, something which I have fond memories of as a child, which I wanted to share with my husband.

My husband came to the UK to study for his Masters degree at Cardiff uni from Nigeria in 2020. He moved to Manchester as a post-grad in 2022, where we met and we then married in 2024. We love to do cultural activities together, visit different cities/towns etc and it's really nice for him to see and experience the things that shaped me growing up, and gives him a greater appreciation of the UK. Our visit to Blackpool was completely soured by every single lamppost having a tatty England flag attached to it. The flags symbolise to us both that he, and others like him, mainly people of colour, are not wanted. We all know why they have been put up, and by who. They have sinister tones of racism, and are extremely off putting to anyone who is aware of why they are being put up. Frankly, it makes us feel unsafe to us to visit places like that.

I would assume that you would want everyone to see the famous Blackpool lights, regardless of where they were born, or how they came to live here. This is not the way it appears. It appears that white people are welcome and 'Others' are not. As we drove down the promenade, he said to me 'all I can see is the flags' and it was just shit. Shit, embarrassing, upsetting. So we came home to Old Trafford, another big town for tourists and where there are exactly zero flags on lampposts.

I dont expect a reply to this email, I don't need one. I just wanted to let you know how this feels to people of colour, and their friends and families, who visit Blackpool. As a diverse country, this behaviour needs nipping in the bud, especially in places that attract visitors to the UK. The chances of him ever wanting to go back are absolutely none. You need to be aware of the negative impression this will have on your town and, more importantly, the impact on people whose main takeaway from visiting is that they are not welcome there.

In fact I’m gonna say it: never have & won’t wear a poppy. Doesn’t make me some kind of Right On Sister Of The Revolution etc. but tend to reject forced signals & didn’t really get brought up with that War Christmas attitude. Makes me uneasy.
