First book of the year - The Brief History of the Dead by Kevin Brockmeier. Maybe starting the year with a book about humanity being wiped out by a lab leaked virus (written in 2003!) was not the best choice.
A book cover. On the cover a creepy image of an empty trenchcoat hanging on a coathanger held open by hands coming out of the arms. The title, The Brief History of the Dead, and author's name, Kevin Brockmeier, are superimposed over the coat.
Fun!! Just when we were going through Mineral Cup withdrawal!
Hark! What’s that we see on the horizon?

Is it something new? Something mostly metallic, quite heavy, and essential to society? It’s an all-new collaboration with IMA!

Ore Cup: www.mineralcup.org/about-ore-cup

Voting starts Monday November 3. Winner crowned IMA Ore Mineral of the Year
YES. In more than one case, telling the algorithm "I'm not interested in this" or blocking a post (when I can...it's harder to do this in Meta land when they forcefully insert the content into your feed these days) has resulted in MORE of similar content. It's so gross.
Second, there is limited interruption in the barrage of misinformation and misogyny that is algorithmically delivered to them. My feeds, once rife with critical analysis and interesting perspective, are now flooded with garbage. This, despite curating my feeds for the last decade.

Hard work and great decisions matter a lot. But they can't fully overcome bad luck or toxic environments.
History will not be kind to him.
For sure good air filtration makes it safer, but it’s all about layers of protection!
They’re doubling down so hard on the “crazy left, dangerous Dems” messaging. Really scary propaganda.
Also I don’t remember if they called it corporate espionage. It’s what I always called it! I just had to worry about the “don’t show your confidential research to competitors inadvertently, esp on flights that everyone uses” part.
The lawyers that did my corporate espionage training - how to avoid it, how to do it ethically when a competitor is openly sharing info, like while working on a plane - would be horrified. This is pretty basic stuff.

But maybe they really don’t care who sees their disdain for the 1st amendment.
Currently on a flight to Japan watching a Pentagon Assistant Press Secretary (Riley Podleski) work on a document in the open on her laptop. She spent the last hour copy and pasting headlines from articles critical of the Administration’s hostility toward the 1st amendment.
Just started Katabasis by RF Kuang, a story about a PhD candidate that travels to literal hell to find her advisor for a letter of recommendation. And everyone that’s been through a dissertation nods their head and says relatable.

this is worse than the "TACO" meme

It's real people, real lives, real careers.
And it's our health at stake, through all these actions.
Whoops! Trump’s team “mistakenly” fired hundreds of CDC scientists — including the very experts fighting measles and deadly outbreaks — and is now scrambling to rehire them.

America’s public health is being dismantled by sheer incompetence. #BlueSky #MedSky #NewsSky

The days are getting shorter, and there is less sunlight. This is a signal for the deciduous trees’ leaves to prepare for winter and to stop making the chlorophyll they use to absorb energy from sunlight during photosynthesis. The leaves convert the energy into sugars to feed the tree. Trees begin

I just saw the first episode of Silo after being a Fallout fan since Fallout 3. So its grounded, serious take on the same setup made me think of if you showed someone the Clone Wars/prequels and then had them watch Andor.

the plan has been this from the start, but it’s still no less shocking how deranged and reckless they are
I've been deliberately avoiding the news for my stupid mental health but took a peak this morning. The absolute cruelty and misguided revenge of this administration is dumbfounding. We will all suffer from this, but I feel so much for the employees caught in this stupid web.

I don’t know who needs to hear this but the CDC is being eviscerated right now. America is not going to have any kind of outbreak response capacity after tonight. Americans’ health data is no longer secure. Say goodbye to federal public health in any capacity. It’s a disaster. We won’t recover.

These wildflowers were positively glowing on a walk in a nearby National Forest this past summer.

My favorite the professionally made lanterns. An axolotl!

We went to a lantern festival last night, and part of the display was rows and rows of lanterns painted by local school kids.
