Why wouldn’t Kevin just take the boy into his own home to protect him? The boy does not want that. His parents were taken but he’s convinced they’ll return. He just needs to defend his only home until they return. He’s the man of the house now. Kevin gets that.

But I think there’s a redemption angle for Buzz here. Not one of the primary ICE agents tasked with catching the kid, at the end he sees the impact. He turns in his badge at the end.

Kevin, fraught with issues of trust and abandonment, teaches the boy how to defend his house from the slapstickly incompetent ICE agents to save him, but in the process perhaps the boy also saves Kevin, leading him to finally forgive his estranged family their repeated failures.
